Why did Emerald replace the real champion with this literally who Gym leader? I feel like people who started with Emerald as it's "the true version" might not even know Steven was the original champion and Wallace was the 8th gym leader. Seriously what was the point? Steven is an actual story character you meet several times along your journey so it's all the more poignant when he turns out to be the champion. Meanwhile Wallace is out of nowhere, there's no attachment to him. Not to mention it's weird that the champion is water type when one of the evil teams/box legendary is also water themed and typed, it's like it unevens the magma/aqua and groudon/kyogre duality in favor of the water side.

Hell if they were hellbent on replacing Steven it should have been with Wally, another character with development. Don't you think?

Wallace becoming Champion while his replacement Juan is also Water-type was dumb, especially as one of the villain teams is also Water-based, as you said.

Nigger what? Crystal does almost nothing of note besides the Battle Tower and stationary Suicune. The other main feature, the changed Pokemon availability, was worse in all ways. And although it added aesthetic features that eventually would become mainstays, that's it.
Emerald managed to cleverly rework the story to fit both teams in a natural and rewarding way, brought back one of the better Crystal enhancements in sprite animations, fixed dozens of fuck-ugly tilesets and fonts from the rushed RS, and the Battle Frontier was literally 7 times the content vs the Tower.

That is to say that despite both games being rushed to meet their release deadlines, Gold and Silver were complete, developed thoughts. Crystal was thus a literal afterthought, "oh, wouldn't it be interesting if...?"
While Ruby and Sapphire are incomplete thoughts, a good basis, but rough and half-baked, like a nice dream you woke up from and only half remember over morning tea. Emerald is the dream made real, the finishing touches to make the concept fully realized.

Good post until this part. Best to keep it "secret" and just get a message from dad or birch or whatever about how the league reopened. The observant player will probably suspect its Wallace and will feel rewarded if they guessed it, otherwise it's just a nice surprise
