They're doing what they can to keep up with iPad kids so its only natural they're investing in mobile platforms to keep the younger generation interested in Pokemon. Masuda said so himself when asked about the lack of Battle Frontier in ORAZ years ago that kids these days just don't have the attention spans for console games. While mainly a lame excuse for cutting corners, there's a kernel of truth there.

the games have been so insultingly low quality for so long that I like the mobile game slop more by a huge margin

They haven't abandoned them. People just don't show up enough. They released New Pokemon Snap, Detective Pikachu 1 and 2, Mystery Dungeon DX. They earn more money on mobile so they prioritise it. It is what it is. They probably made more money on TCG Pocket alone than they have from every console only spinoff combined. Sucks for us though.
