Have you considered the mainline games are just no longer the competitive game? Champions will be the competitive main game. It’ll be updated just like home for every new mainline release.
This formula is better and allows them to tweak things in between releases if needed. New comp just has less PP than older formats. Who cares? Could be better for balance if it’s actually possible to run out of PP.

Because it's not "identical" formats, Champions will have Megas and Terastralisation, core games are going to have the new hot gimmick as its focus (never mind Dexit means they're not beholden including ANY the old mega-capable pokémon if they wish, doubly so when a good chunk appeared in both Gen 9 games). Game Freak aren't giving up their VGC rounds and Ishihara's too clever to run a competitve battle sim, without giving spergs and 'tistics something to fight for (as just being in the building causes them to spend money on pokétat).
