With how awful and underwhelming it was, I don't think it would have made any difference.
The earliest they should have done anything was a week after the Switch 2 launched to keep the hype up.
Now we're over a month into the Switch 2's lifecycle and it's marred with legal litigation and general concerns with ownership of the console.
This direct was like being hit by a water noodle when it needed to be a nuclear warhead if they hoped to get more people invested into the Switch 2 before making concession for lackluster sales.

The Switch 2 is selling extremely well so I don't think there's any concern there. That said though, you're right things could've been way better. As someone who owns one myself I was let down by Mario Kart and DK doesn't seem my cup of tea, so I really wanted to be pleasantly surprised by ZA Switch 2 edition. All we got was a measly one mega that looks shit, and they didn't even bother doing a special design for the games bundle.
The game is out only in a few months and I still feel like we've seen fuck all despite it being announced in February of last year. So horribly managed
