Johto had fewer artists and a single artist would do multiple maps while in Kanto pretty much every single one was done by a separate person and most of them don't seem that experienced with pixel art. There was also a lot of clashing pixel styles while everyone in Johto went with mimicing the GBC Pokemon artstyle.
There is a guy doing all of Kanto by himself, anima_nel, who so far has done a better job than the Kanto redrawn

I'm also going to dispute the first and third rows. Blue looks basically comparable to me to that snippet of FFL, and while Golden Sun looks better in that shot in practice the graphics felt like ass. The way the stairs blend in with the cliff there is a great example, it tries to implement a sense of verticality that instead just creates a weird vertigo effect and makes it hard to navigate. Ruby isn't particularly impressive, but I never struggled to read its maps

the problem is that if they were to go with 2D graphics even today, on that scale and on that complexity, the games would still flop compared to 3D. The average normiefag doesn't care about how complex the skybox looks or how much love and soul was poured into a game. I know every gamefreak game has flopped bc they were complete ass. But, unlike their shitty non-pokemon games, this one seems kind of fun from what we've seen in the trailer (aside from obvious peformance issues). If the game manages to deliver 80% of what it showed in the trailer then it would unironically be a success since word of mouth would go around bc "oh my god its le heckin pokemon developer!!"
