No, this was originally how megas were supposed to be depicted. Megas were originally supposed to involve high affection/ friendship in order to use them. It was a last minute story/ game mechanic change they made when they realized kids want an easy super form button instead of a mechanic they had to work for. That’s why there’s a bunch of leftover material about megas going berserk in the gen 6 side material and why there’s leftover dialogue in game that no longer makes sense about how Sycamore couldn’t use megas even though they trained for it.

I mean, it should have been obvious from the way they were depicted in the anime - the Pokemon in question generally looked to be in extreme pain and had a tendency to go berserk, like Lucario. The whole reason they originally planned for you to need to have high affection to use it was because your Pokemon needed to have the utmost faith and loyalty to you to willingly put themselves through the pain needed for the transformation; the physical strain on their bodies is also why the transformation is temporary, as staying transformed for too long would presumably kill them.

I imagine megas were originally designed with Dark and Edgy™ in mind, and the main pokemon team was talked out of it last minute. Either for marketability, letting kids use them, or feeling that it’d alienate an potential audience. The concept made it into the anime and Super Mystery Dungeon, so the original concept material had to have been given approval and shipped out to the anime staff and Spike Chunsoft at one point to be worked on to the point of being unable to remove it before X and Y ultimately decided to whitewash the concept.

Mega evolution if they were competently written:
