I didn't like trade evos like Phantump because I have people to trade with, so I have to force myself not to evolve it right away.
Afaik trade evos were never like stone evos where you miss out on moves by evolving them right away

it's a battling simulator where you unlock new characters through the story mode, like a fighting game
inside the story mode is where you can also spend time training your characters and unlocking/teaching them skills

trading was brilliant back in the days before the internet because you genuinely didn't know if something would evolve when it got traded and if you were the kid in the playground who had an Alakazam you were the alpha. nowadays full dexes get leaked weeks before launch and people set up trade codes to get evolutions so it doesn't matter anymore. but redditors would throw a shitfit if the newest pokemon game didn't recycle every single legacy mechanic from 30 years ago so it stays

I'm not gonna pay 20 extra bucks just to trade.
