That being said, I can't imagine these being better than the Paldea rivals. I already dislike how similar they look in terms of physique and frame, and how similar their interests are. Also, if they're already established as your "best friends" at the start of the game like the XY retards, I will instantly lose all interest.

Obviously barry and your rival in gen 4 work better, but like I said, you can ARGUE it's been like that since gen 3, not that it's a strong or correct argument. It's mostly wally carrying the weight as your friend going on an adventure with.

And as typing this I just remembered, one of the first things in all of pokemon is a reference to the movie stand by me on the protags tv. The idea of "childhood friends adventuring together" is built into the franchise's dna, and that's not getting into the gen 1 anime giving ash traveling companions.

Not really. I like the characters individually (well most of them. Don’t care for Kieran and don’t like Penny) found the Gen 9 friend group to be really forced. I liked Alola & Galar having the major cast have overlapping dynamics instead.

I only noticed this on a recent replay of Scarlet but the game never even gives you a full shot of your team at the end of the game, like every other game does after the E4. It instead gives you a picture of the friends and the bike lizard. If you're going to take that aspect of the games away then at least make whatever you replace it with satisfying, which they haven't yet.

The best option would be to start with two rivals, and gain new friends through side-questing or progressing. I don't like that we focus so much on some anime characters when I just want to adventure and see interactions with pokemons.

I would've been fine with just the one rival, like the first few games.
But I guess they want to simulate the Ash anime.
