The experience of actually playing them is very different. Gen 4 and 5 are almost identical, while Gen 6 and everything after are almost identical. I personally blame lack of general innovation for the latter, but to put it another way there's no real reason to backport Pokermon from Gen 5 to Gen 4 because they'd function basically the same. Similarly there's not a compelling reason to backport Pokemon from Gen 7+ to Gen 6 because aside from a buff to Dark type and a few number changes here and there the fundamentals of the battle system are too similar. Hell, there's a lot of differences in what you talked about anyway, notably the grid based design only really applies in ORAS because XY has the skates for most of the game, and even when you're not allowed to use them walking diagonally is extremely powerful (look at the ice puzzle that breaks immediately when you do so). I could also go on about how much the c-gear is fucking worthless and nothing like the cool and awesome PSS but I'm probably getting too in to the weeds at this point.

Mega Dragonite follows the same pattern as Mega Charizard Y and Mega Metagross - it takes elements from its previous evolution and incorporates them into its new form. 'Zard Y has the middle horn from Charmeleon and the back spikes from Charmander (that were retconned out of existence yet are still being referenced for some reason); Metagross gets and entire Metang glued to its underside, complete with empty sockets for its eyes; Dragonite gets the wing-ears and weather-controlling tail orb from Dragonair.
I'm still not sure what the idea behind Mega Garchomp was, other than "give it bigger scythes and cover it with hideous spikes!". It doesn't follow the pattern and is easily the worst looking thing there.
