Its still pretty shitty for the kid to have to shoulder the weight of his dog's life. There is a line between being responsible for the care of a pet, and 'your friend is going to die unless you somehow make a miracle happen'. Its a fucked situation that happened to have a happy ending. This is a pretty benign example of 'feel good' stories that ignore how fucked the situation actually is, I've just seen others that were more extreme examples that it reminds me of.

Would never happen today, subhuman scalpers would bumrush the stand and offer the kid pennies for the whole collection. In between throwing punches at each other and getting winded from walking 5 steps, that is.

I know it's not necessarily the case here where the treatment is just $650 but I've never understood people who will put themselves like 20 grand in debt to get surgery done on their pet.
Don't think me amoral, I love my pets, but I have been faced with that decision before and it's just infeasible to spend that much money on an animal. You just gotta know when to let them go.
