What are some misconceptions you had as a kid?

I used to believe that if you use Dark Pulse or Hidden Power on an enemy and the little balls struck the enemy Pokemon's sprite, they would take extra damage from the attack.

Pressing B would increase the catch rates, also Pressing B during a enemy attack would lower the damage. B button was broken back then.

Raising and lowering your stats in battle permanently changed them
I don't think I was completely in the wrong because I've heard other people had this problem too. Every game they can beat over the head with tutorials for the most simplest of mechanics but refuse to tell you anything important.
I didn't even know what natures were for and thought it was just for flair because the earliest games don't tell you what they actually do

I thought that the secondary type had less impact (usually by half) on type effectiveness.
For example, with Lapras (Water/Ice), I thought that Electric moves would deal x2 but Fighting moves would deal only x1.5, meanwhile water moves would deal x0.5 and Ice moves x0.75.

I thought this too but then one time I decided to be "smart" and checked my stats before a battle. So then when my stats got lowered by an opponent I immediately went to my stats page, saw that they were exactly the same as before, and concluded that stat-altering moves actually do nothing so I should never worry about or use them again.

Rock was resistant to Electric. In my defense Aerodactyl is the only gen 1 Rock-type you battle against that's not also Ground-type and I never cared to check Kabuto/Omanyte's types. In fact, it wasn't until gen III when I was bored and used Thunder Wave on a Nosepass that I learned it did normal damage.

Yeah I'd say it's a UI problem. You're told you got weaker but most players will still be able to defeat enemies just fine and you aren't told exactly how much damage you did.
I really loved gen 7's addition where you can see your stat buffs and debuffs, so modern newer players shouldn't have this issue.

I think I've mentioned this in similar threads before, but when I was like 6 I could swear Rock was super-effective against Normal. My rationale was that Normal was closest to what humans are, and as a human, getting rocks thrown at you really fucking hurts.

As a kid, I thought that Flying was supereffective against Water, since birds eat fish.
Even though it never said “it's supereffective!” when I used a Flying attack against Water-types, I always assumed it was just “one of those times the game forgets to say it's supereffective” - I also thought that the game sometimes just... didn't report that an attack was supereffective, for some reason.

It's kind of baffling how little the game explains about stat increases when it holds your hand over so many other things like type matchups. I think the majority of kids don't bother with stat increases at cause it's really unclear what they even do, so it seems dogshit compared to normal attacks.
I also had no idea what they even do until I looked up on the internet in like 2004.

they hate giving you hard numbers probably because it ruins "the magic" or whatever. they do the same thing with EVs and IVs

Even games for adults do this, SMT will have one move that says it does "moderate" damage and one move that says it does "extreme" damage and then the moderate damage skill does more and the one that says it does "moderate" damage only says that because there's stronger moves in that category later and they want to use the same terminology for everything..

I think EVs and IVs can be explained in an immersive way - which they usually still don't do.

I think SV might be the first game to actually fully explain stat increases with the actual numbers, but it's in an optional class at the academy.

The thing is, with games like smt you see the damage you dealt displayed in numbers, so it's easier to gauge how effective things like buffs and type matchups are, in pokemon you only get to see the hp bar, so it's harder to notice if that growl had an effect at all.

I had seriously no idea Milotic evolved from Feebas. They look so different, I never would've guessed its supposed to be an evolution line. I was like "what the FUCK" when I found out online. I thought they were both single stage mons.

Similar story with the Trapinch line. I missed that one trainer who uses a Vibrava, so I was wondering the whole time when I will finally get Flygon's prestage or if it was single stage. I had no idea Trapinch was the first stage cause it looks so different, and I had never heard of antlions before.

Don't think me as one of the those people who are like "the kids game is too easy" but I really don't see much of a reason for people playing the campaign to do anything other than select the move the game tells you is super effective
Gamefreaks continued insistence on every challenge being based around a single type hasn't helped matters. You can just sweep through entire gyms with just one mon doing the same move over and over.
Personally I wonder if type effective moves shouldn't be a whole 2x damage.
>>58041620
>but it's in an optional class at the academy
Yeah there ain't a single kid who ever did the academy classes except for mashing through it when it forces you for the legendaries. I don't even know why I did them. I guess I thought they'd be fun but it was so damn boring. Anyone less committed would've dropped out of class long before finishing

I know, but the game constantly forces you to interact with stat lowering or boosting moves. Literally every Pokémon learns them. At that point you might as well just tell the player what the fuck they do. You have to put conscious effort into ignoring them, and that's stupid.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can get the legendaries without doing the history class. The stakes are always available iirc.
