I recently went back and watched some early Pokemon and Ash's Butterfree is weirdly sympathetic in its focus episodes as a Caterpie/Metapod. Like it just wants to be loved and is kinda emotional/oversensitive and really takes it hard when it feels rejected by Ash or Misty. Cute voice acting too. Can't speak for how it's portrayed as a Butterfree because I only watched a handful of episodes at the time, but apparently it mostly disappears until the episode in the OP?

Anyway yeah Butterfree itself is probably underused until the episode where they expect you to give a fuck that it's leaving, but in its first few pre-evolved appearances it is weirdly really likeable.

Also since my phrasing was weird here: yeah I did actually watch these episodes as a kid, but can't remember specific details beyond the most basic plots since it's been a while. So honestly not sure how much Butterfree showed up
