Only to be memory holed as a post-game gimmick in Sun-Moon.
Gen 7's Z-move gimmick, i think was a direct response to Yokai-Watch having access to Super Moves in battle, back when it was huge in Japan.
Obviously it makes sense to not have both gimmicks available during your initial playthrough, as Mega's are still more hype to most.
The ONLY new gimmick that could best even Mega's hype levels, would be Pokemon-Fusion gimmick , like Infinite Fusions.
Its not about moves, viability or whatever; for the avarage casual consumer, the ability to fucking fuse together your fav obscure Pokemon is the greatest thing ever.
