Why did Megaevolution succeed where other gimmicks didn't? Teras is the best mechanically but it's the ugliest, okay, but why did Z-moves and specially Dynamax flop so hard?

Due to being the first "gimmick", Megas didn't feel like a gimmick. It was assumed at the time that they were a new type of evolution that would stick around going forward.
They only really became a gimmick retroactively after they were dropped and replaced with a new shitty alt-form mechanic.

It meant people let themselves get attached to Megas in a way they didn't bother with the others because then we KNEW they'd only be around for one generation.

Regardless on your opinions of specific mega designs, it was popular and then they threw it away next generation.
Only to be memory holed as a post-game gimmick in Sun-Moon.

Gen 7's Z-move gimmick, i think was a direct response to Yokai-Watch having access to Super Moves in battle, back when it was huge in Japan.
Obviously it makes sense to not have both gimmicks available during your initial playthrough, as Mega's are still more hype to most.

The ONLY new gimmick that could best even Mega's hype levels, would be Pokemon-Fusion gimmick , like Infinite Fusions.
Its not about moves, viability or whatever; for the avarage casual consumer, the ability to fucking fuse together your fav obscure Pokemon is the greatest thing ever.

I feel its the most open about how the mechanic is gonna favour certain mon over others, like the rest try and act like they are for everyone but they benefit using your one use on the same few mon in teams that gives best effect. And by doing that and thus giving (generally good) new designs make it stand out more. Also was not as obviously a one gen gimmick.

It was the first one.
No really. Thatโ€™s it.
Design wise, Tera is more mechanically interesting, and Gigantamax is easily better visually.
But Mega was flashy and new. Z-Moves were obviously never going to be as big of as transforming your whole mon, and by the time we got to Dynamax, everyone was already sick of gimmicks.

Mega evolutions are just "what if a fully evolved Pokemon could go even further by using what are essentially evolution stones made from the lifeforce of other Pokemon" and that's something that fits much pretty naturally in the world of Pokemon. It feels more akin to regional variants and way less like a gimmick than "what if you could use a supercharged move of each type by using the energy from the light Necrozma used to have" and "the dynamax/terastal phenomenon makes Pokemon transform into giants/another type from the energy of a legendary from outer space because it can."

Most people love crossgen evos. But if the design does not appeal to you megas are a lot easier to ignore without intentionally gimping yourself.

Z-Moves and Dynamax simply aren't as appealing and memorable as new evolutions.

You needed to go out of your way to find a gmax raid for that Pokemon because they only added soups in the DLC and you could only use them in like 15 battles during the story. Megas covered a bunch of popular shillmon and you didn't have to replace the Mawile you caught before the second gym with one later on to use its mega evo.

I guess that is a good part of it. Helps them feel even more substantial than they are.
A pokemon getting an entirely new battle form with a new design, stats, ability, typing, it's exciting and cool. I really did expect them to continue making megas.
Then they got put on hold for one time super moves that were frankly just kind of lame to use, and then thrown out entirely for pokemon but big for 3 turns. Tera's cool mechanically too but it looks retarded
