There is nothing wrong with Max. Ralts episode was kino, and his friendship with Jirachi made Movie 6 possible.

it was the most boring season to me
even the choices of mons in their teams and wasted potential in characters
max is just a dead weight, he doesn't even have any companion mon, completely useless
then there's brock, glorified cooking pot
both ash and may have meh pokemon
ash's sceptile and may's beautifly and skitty are good choices in their respective teams, but the rest are garbage
the pacing also feels bad, like how may's combusken evolves at the very end lol
i feel like dp anime was much better in comparison
brock is far more useful and even plans to become a doctor
dawn is much better at contests and even has better mons that she can utilize well with combination moves
ash has really good mons and even has a tough worthy rival, maybe the best rival in the entire anime
the story in gen 4 is pretty intense too, the pacing, the characters, the evil team motives, everything feels engaging
and once again, gen 5 anime seems like a downgrade to gen 4 anime

The average fillers were a step up from Johto, but there were less standout good filler. This is also the season where they start to put more emphasis on training and battling, but the strategies being used are the most brain dead the anime has ever seen and May's contests are even worse. Some of the shit they pull makes 'aim for the horn' look like genius writing.
Oh and Ash not having a rival until the very end was a strange decision. Shame because May's rivals were pretty good while the fat ginger was horrible

Funny how at the time it was airing it felt like a completely different show, but now it almost feels like it was part of OS.
Now that I think about it, maybe that's why it has such trouble standing out these days. It didn't have enough of its own identity away from its predecessor so it blurs together in people's memory. Probably for the best, they would have really alienated people if they took a bigger step than they already did.
