Generation 3 can be considered the peak of Pokémon, mostly due to when it was released. It was released during the 6th generation of consoles. This generation was a war; Nintendo and others were desperate to create the best games to rival the competition. Pokémon was past its initial peak. Yu-Gi-Oh! was the biggest Pokémon rival at that time.
Generation 3 introduced many new mechanics, like Natures or Abilities.
It featured some of the greatest designed Pokémon, like Flygon, Blaziken, or Salamence.
It also spawned many spin-offs, like Mystery Dungeon.

I used to be a 3rd gen babby (couldn't say h o e n b a b b y because of the spambot) and started so many flame threads here back in 2013. I swore Hoenn was the best. But I took a long haitus on being a pokemon autist for a few years (still bought every release to date though) and replayed Crystal version back in 2022 or 23. It was my first time playing Gen II since grade school and I loved it.

Mind you that during the hoenn babe years I talked the WORST shit about Gen II, said it sucked and is the most overrated bc of the dual-region, every anti-genII buzzphrase in the book. But when I replayed Crystal recently, I realized that I enjoyed it more than RSE for the first time in my life and realized that Gen III is equally as good as every other generation to me. They all have their quirks and good and bad about them but at the end of the day I learned that pokemon is a great way to waste time no matter what game you play.

Gen 3 was super polarizing for years. Until about 10 years ago, Hoenn was the region everyone contested. Too much water, new Pokemon look like Digimon or are overdesigned, Evil team plots are dumb, no day-night cycle, no compatibility with previous games, zero wild Pokemon variety in the seas, etc.
There were valid (and a few weird) reasons people disliked it

I find it strange that sequels get applauded for new mechanics while people turn a blind eye to the first game of any given franchise where they created everything out of thin air.
I don't think praising Gen 3 for being the best because of what it introduced is valid because you might as well say Gen 1 is the best for being the most innovative.

Love how you ignored all the points made. Sure, the designs thing is subjective. But, all the sea routes with nothing but Tentacool and Wingull, no transfer from Gen 2 (effectively rendering all your Pokemon you spent years collecting and raising worthless) and removed features. It was so disappointing coming off of the heights Gold and Silver (Crystal too, I guess) provided.

Unova was the most controversial region from pretty much the moment it released (2010, so 15 years ago). The most "controversy" Hoenn ever had was le too much water meme. It was always regarded as a great region.
