Yes the idea of having exclusives to trade was fun, but they knew some kids would just buy 2 gameboys, both games and trade with themselves.

If they really wanted to do trading without that in mind, they could have just had x amount of the wild pokemon generate randomly based on the player ID or whatever. That way everyone's buying the same game, and they'd just find friends with the pokemon they can't get. GB technology could easily do that.

If you already have a player assigned, random value, then you can just have the game read, I don't fucking know, the last digit of the trainer ID, to pull one of a fistful of encounter tables for a particular route, and just have some of these reflect exclusives. Someone with 7 or 8 can't get, I dunno, Magmar, Sandshrew, Ekans, Jymx, Oddish. Someone with 1 or 2 can't get Meowth, Magmar, Electabuzz, Jigglypuff, Oddish, Koffing. Ect
