ITT: Pokémon that aren't really anything
I feel like this "genre" of Pokémon is rarer and rarer as gens go on.
Not based on a specific animal, not based on an object, not based on a job, not based on mythology.
Ones where they're nothing but a Pokémon.

Are they slugs, anthropomorphic stomachs, or just generic blobs?
Who knows!

They're stupid and ugly, and they weigh down an otherwise perfect regional dex.

it's a slime mold + a turtle. definitely pretty unique, but it does have inspiration.

What the fuck is wrong with this place. It's snake wine, it's the "fermentation pokemon" in japanese

Beta sprite. Snakes in a vase fermenting. It's a berry gimmick. Someone post that anime webm of it making "juice"
Anonymous No.58136082 [Report] >>58136401 >>58136460
>>58136046
It's also inspired by snake alcohol, which is why it ferments berries into berry juice. Earlier iterations of Shuckle's design make this more obvious.
No idea why it became a bug later on.

I don't have this, but have the neat art it got for TCG Pocket.
Anonymous No.58136095 [Report] >>58136135
>>58136081
it's all of the above. the overall silhouette is obviously based on a turtle, the concept of the Pokemon is based on fermentation/snake wine, fermentation can also be achieved via fungus hence the slime mold and the design of its body within the shell.
idk why people think Pokemon can only be based on one thing, it has multiple inspirations.

It's not that fucking deep you moron you're just reciting the Bulbapedia origin page. The concept was a vase it snakes but it looked too on the nose so they made it more organic/ambiguous looking. The beta makes it unquestionable, it's not like after the fact they were like "hmmmm what if we also made it a turtle and since fermentation can also be achieved via mold maybe we should make the snakes kinda like a slime mold"

>But how could we have known before the beta?
>Gen 2 Pokedex: The Berries it stores in its vase-like shell decompose and become a gooey liquid.
It's obvious for the japanese, especially since there's no moronic "mold pokemon" mistranslation muddying the idea

What's bizarre is that it was only rock type originally, I wonder why bug was suddenly added on to it. It's not like Johto was lacking in the type.

Anonymous No.58136344 [Report]
>>58136206
I guess they didn't want the vase to be the only thing determining the type and in this context they felt that snakes were close enough to the realm of creepy crawleys. And along with snakes some invertebrates are also often used in these brews, scorpions and large hornets are particularly popular. Really I feel like it should have been rock/poison

Their theme got scrapped. Gulpin was supposed to be a thief bag and Swalot was a Faberge egg. I don't have the sprites on-hand but Gulpin's little yellow feather was a tie and Swalot was a golden egg-shape. I don't know why they got turned into stomach lumps but it was clearly an idea they didn't know what to do with but also didn't wanna scrap the line

the slime mold thing is debatable but it clearly does resemble a turtle in a shell. I don't know why it's so difficult for some people to wrap their heads around that Pokemon can have more than one inspiration. it's not that complicated.

Based Sigibros. I used this beautiful bastard to setup Cosmic Power/Stored Power circles around my friend group back when BW first came out and he's been one of my signature fellas ever since. The gf and I have plans to vacation in Peru in a few weeks and we're taking a flight over the Nazca lines, just so I can finally officially justify myself as a true Sigilyph trainer. Keep up the Sigilove, my dudes, I am always with you.

To be fair, I may have worded my OP badly.
I should've specified that things which are so far from their inspiration that they're beyond recognition also count.

Draw a bird slightly stylized (like an old native culture or something) one eye facing you, two wings, legs outstretched either side, tail feathers hanging down. Looks weird because it's so stylized. Now take that drawing and make it 3d - the one eye facing you in the center of its now conical head, two wings on either side, the legs are now little arms that are fork-shaped, and the tail feathers hang down like streamers.

Draw Sigilyph from the front on some paper and think of it as a drawing of a bird, it's actually super clever, I love this guy. And having to wrap your mind around it making it psychic... yeah. Great mon.
