Every other Mega Evolution for the applicable Starter Pokemon generally retained the identity of the Pokemon other than Mega Charizard X (which was a very safe, but nonetheless cool design) and maybe Mega Swampert. Why is the concept for Mega Feraligatr drastically different than normal Feraligatr's?

he was confusing the single large spine on its back for a spinosaurus sail instead of being a concavenator spine. It's a pretty forgivable thing to confuse considering baxcalibur's spine closely resembles a sail and most people are more familiar with spinosaurus compared to concavenator. His points are actually fair despite the species mixup anyway, just doing another godzilla mon instead of something more deep-cut is still a fully valid criticism imo.

Very interesting idea, I think it's a bit cute how it mimics Totodile, however they didn't even give us a lore reason as to why that is. I know some Pokemon regress or take features from pre-evos like Charizard Y, Tyranitar or Ampharos, but this is overwhelming, it feels more Totodile than Feraligatr if it makes sense.

By far the most boring of the bunch honestly. It's not bad, but it's falling into Mega Venusaur territory where it just grows bigger.
All three are decent but I think the Kalos starters got cooler evolutions, to the point where I'm confused as to why we didn't just have them as starters instead, they are more in-line with Kanto and Hoenn starters.

This is clearly based on a 'Y' shape. Look at the antenna and head, they resemble a 'Y'. The long neck of the meganium resembles the stem of the Y with the antenna being the two points.

This is an 'X'. The Two large flames on its chest resemble the top two points of the 'X' shape, with the legs being the lower two points of the 'X'

This is a 'Y'. Facing the front and with it's jaw closed, the false 'arms' of the totodile pointing up give the resemblance of a letter 'Y' shape.

If you'd told me when Gold/Silver released that was Meganium's default appearance I would believe you.

Feraligatr in my opinion is terrible to the point it feels intentional. Like it's designed more to elicit a strong reaction than to actually be a functional, coherent Mega. I feel like peope who hate it will hate it as much as the people who love it, love it. It's the pop-funko, labubu, 'you have to get it' approach - I think it will age very badly as a result.

Emboar to me feels like a marriage of these two approaches. They took a strong theme and ran with it knowing that if you don't like the theme, you won't like the design. It doesn't feel like it was designed strictly to make people either love it or hate it. I think this approach is probably the best one to take for mega evolutions.

Emboar s the best. Meganium is ok bit would look better if the leaves covering its body weren't entirely green. I don't hate Feraligatr in concept but it looks like a new gimmick altogether, not a Mega Evolution. And the crest when its "open" looks terrible.

My biggest complaint is how bad they look together; there's no coherence. Obviously, base Emboar stood out for not belonging to the same generation, but I was hoping that with the Mega forms they'd give them a common motif to make them look like a set.

The PLA starters had a simple approach: they're Samurott, Decidueye, and Typhlosion, but in an old Japanese version. They could have done something similar with Parisian motifs.

Now, a simple solution: they would have kept the Kalos starters, which do have a consistent design, and left Feraligtr and the rest as separate DLCs.

This is my issue with megas that gain new body elements altogether like sceptile

Because mega forms have the same movepool as the base form, they can't incorporate any changes outside of awkwardly adding moves to get stab like ampharos getting dragon pulse. A new powerful tail shooting move would have been great on sceptile, and slash moves for emboar like you said, but since the base form lacks the physical ability to really take advantage of these moves, it just doesn't work as well

There doesn't seem to be an cohesive theme to these starters. In Arceus all three regional forms fit the setting of feudal Japan perfectly

The worst part is that Feraligatr wearing a "helmet" that's like a larger crocodile mark could have been super cool. If it was only slightly larger and his eyes were visible underneath and he didn't have this goofy ass pose. Literally just make it Cubone but Feraligatr and it would have been great. Meganium actually looks the best IMO. Pretty pleased with it. Emboar has always looked ugly and its Mega isn't much of an improvement.
Feraligatr though? They just ruined it. Straight-up. Its design makes me question the intelligence of Pokemon designers. Like who let that get approved?
I've seen fan concepts of Megas that look like pre-stage forms (Pic rel), and I've seen 'armored' Feraligatr concepts based on the leaks early on.
But like I legitimately cannot wrap my head around how Feraligatr was improved. From the toilet seat above its head to abnormally stretching its arms just to make the concept work.
