They saw a giant fucking pterodactyl, and the most creative thing they decided to do with its design is staple giant rocks onto its wings and give it a beard.
Why not give it larger wings and make it move like a vampire bat, like real pterodactyls, and stick those giant rocks onto actual claws? Or add in features of other dinosaurs— give it a super long tail with an ankylosaurus mace made out of diamonds. They could have elongated the jaws to make them look like a beak, but kept the teeth so it just looked like the close-up of a penguin’s mouth instead. Could have even had those teeth sticking out the sides, like an alligator, to make it look really scary.
They could have done so much with a Mega Aerodactyl, and they decided to go with… rocky facial hair.
