But this comes having just rewatched the movie, and hmm. Some of the CG is weak and I've never been a fan of the "we are the special people who know all about the plot" fallback trope you see in several of them that is particularly in force here, but it uses its characters well and the artwork and CG that do hold up really hold up. Hell they even address why Ash can't use Corphish to help him grab the jewels in the finale- because he's back on the boat! Small thing but I respect that someone thought of it.

I just realized, realistically, May probably would've really cut up (or worse!) both her elbows with that fall, and probably her knees too. I mean, that's not soft terrain she went down on. If it weren't children's cartoon logic, she would've fucked herself up pretty bad on that landing.

The Manaphy movie has a very underrated musical score imo. It's overshadowed by the better-remembered scores from its surrounding movies, Lucario and Darkrai, but it's very atmospheric in its own right.

I wish May had kept the "People of the Water" crystal bracelet in the main show, even if only as a silent callback. The movie's way too late into AG to have made an appearance, but her having it someone during her DP reappearance, even if only shown in her bag or something, would've been nice. It's unfortunate that so little art exists with her wearing it.

Essentially. The closing episodes of AG basically start deconstructing May's character and relationships, giving her this painful existential crisis. "Oh, you know this thing that was really nice? Actually, it was having negative effects on May!" Thinking back, part of me thinks the reason the Manaphy movie threw Advanceshippers so many bones was because the main show was going to, very shortly thereafter, punch them in the gut, having May need to leave the group and specifically say it's because being around Ash had prevented her from becoming her own trainer, and the writers felt bad.

It's not THAT uncommon for kids' shows to actually show characters get bruised from these things and go "it's no big deal, the important thing is that x is okay", Pokemon did it several times.

Granted, from the looks of things, it's clearly gotten better for May by the time DP comes around but the last 20ish eps+M09 are this depressive spiral for a character.

And add onto this the fact that, when she returns in DP, she's actually in the midst of yet another rut, despite having 3 Johto ribbons. It's only reuniting with Ash and Brock, and (despite losing) helping dig Dawn out of her own depressive spiral, that May seems to bounce back. And, by the time we see her in Journeys, she appears to be the most famous of all of Ash's companions, with Serena making a big deal out of letting Koharu borrow the dress of "The Princess of Hoenn," a title she already had by DP. But generally, yes, the last two dozen or so AG episodes are pretty rough on May, basically hammering home the idea that she can't just ride Ash's coattails or be generally dependent on others forever. We see this again when Dawn and Serena leave the group and the end of their respective series too, but it seems the show was much rougher on May about it. Factoring in the Manaphy movie really makes it all the more painful for her.

Being late-series May is truly suffering. In-universe, her last several weeks (?) traveling with Ash and co. had her getting her dreams dashed, clinging to her mentor figure and his final triumph for any semblance of comfort, going through the ups and downs of motherhood within an extremely condensed span of time, and ultimately having to leave her friends and her brother in a desperate effort to finally assert independence, though while now getting to cling to a ribbon half as she travels Johto.
