there's a lot of reasons why but honestly I don't think megas, as temporary power up forms, are enough to justify reusing starters nor are they reason to get excited about and rally behind your pick
even if you love one of their megas it's just kinda off to the side only making sometimes appearances and you're already plenty happy with the original so there's not much of a deal to be had - as opposed to entirely new variants that take the designs in different directions which you can have through a whole game and later pair with the original

Mega Meganium design is uninspired. The least they could've done is give it a tropius sized neck. Mega Feraligatr was the deal breaker for a lot people. The fandom wanted the typical edgy mega, but got the goofy stuff instead.

I'm convinced Meganium is just about as beloved as Charizard is at Game Freak, but since it's widely disliked among the community it doesn't get the same treatment.
I mean think about it:

The point of Z-A is that Lumiose City is becoming a cultural melting pot of pokemon, so urban redevelopment is need to accommodate. It doesn't take place in all of Kalos and there's no ancestry theme unlike Arceus, therefore there's no need for the french themed starter trio. Z-A made it clear that it's not trying to follow the same pattern as Arceus.

How? Regionals aren't buffs like megas are. The Pokemon stays the same shitter it always was, it just gets a new relative. Even the one thing Regional forms allegedly have over megas (always being available whenever the Pokémon is) was already broken with BDSP and will most likely be broken again because Game Freak are lazy bitchados.
ZA may have shat the bed with designing megas, probabaly because XY/ORAS were mostly megas for Pokemon they value the most so they couldn't afford to risk any of them becoming Skibbidied, while ZA megas were mostly for Pokemon that were still important but merely second string shillmons (or they would have gotten megas the first time around). but the principle stays the same.

Because Megas suck and have always sucked. Design wise h=they are inherently bad because it's just overburdening an already completed design with extra bullshit weighing it down. Extra spikes is the most common way, but extra flowers, extra tails, extra fire, or giving the design some stupid "prop" to hold just makes a garbled mess of a design. Regional forms while sometimes lazy, are not inherently so, and can go off in different directions exploring different themes, like making Decidueye a Ronin instead of Robin Hood, whereas a Mega-Decidueye would have just done something stupid like giving him a giant bow and bigger "glasses".
