I didnt do any of that and I still found it easy. The game is actually pretty well paced. I did very minimal exploration, simply just going through the story and every royal took 1 night. I was just about evenly leveled with npcs and it was fairly easy. But most players will be exploring and catching alphas so they will be vastly overleveled

Artificial Difficulty is the only way for turn based games to be hard. Look at SMT, the battle system has way less depth than Pokemon's but it's hard because the design of their games is dishonest as fuck.

This was actually a pretty shitty fight in my last run with Treecko. Really turned me off on Treecko. I can't believe Chikorita was memed as the worst grass starter when it actually has a lot of defensive utility. Treecko has no worthwhile moves until it learns Leaf Blade, in which case it's just a one trick pony. I guess you can use the Bullet Seed TM, but meh.

Hoennfags have gaslit people into believing their starter trio is actually good but Treecko is LEGITIMATELY unusable in Hoenn despite being a fucking Water-infested hellhole. It's really a Blaziken/Swampert game, it especially wants you to pick the latter because the game's Water theming is obnoxiously omnipresent. Chikorita is bad but mostly because the Gym Leaders in Johto are brutal to the Grass type which feels really unintentional. Hoenn is ACTIVELY spiteful to Treecko

What gyms are there in the games where excluding your starter (where relevant) there are no Pokemon capable of dealing STAB super effective damage against that gym’s type before facing?

The first one off the top of my head is Brock in RB where as there’s no Mankey like in Y/FRLG your best option if you picked Charmander is Butterfree’s Confusion or Charmander’s own Ember

Treecko is only really workable in Sapphire. It gets better in ORAS since you get Pledge moves early but it’s still underwhelming. Grass being mediocre isn’t exactly new though.
