Here's a museum of every known Super Gameboy boarder.
Do any of these catch your eye at all? If so, post 'em.

There's a lot of really good stuff. Hard to just pick one. Konami did some very soulful borders for the classic collections.
So I'll just post the one I use the most, doesn't get comfier than this.

I like the ones for Mario's Picross where it pretty much does the default border but in all the Play It Loud colors.
And some of the Game & Watch Gallery ones are nice.

Never heard of Dragon Dance but this one looks cool, if a bit overly complicated.

I prefer the boarders that are actually some sort of boarder, rather than ones that just look like someone went nuts with the sticker tool in a child's painting program.

Some emulators have a "Super Game Boy Color" mode that enables SGB borders on GBC games, and IIRC if it's one of those hybrid GB/GBC games that also has SGB support, it'll load the GBC game and pull up it's unique SGB border, so you get all the benefits of both platforms.

But the monitor could be any resolution/aspect ratio. I wonder how Undertale does it since it's the only modern game I know of that has a border, but I think it only has that on consoles which tell you "16:9 or fuck off" so it probably just doesn't account for it at all

The way bilinear sharp works makes it so the higher your resolution is, the sharper it'll look, because it only averages the output pixels that are where the scaled pixels touch (so the higher rest your output image is, the less of it has averaged pixel colors). It probably looks too soft because the Wii's output resolution is low, but it's great on a higher res display

With a tiled border, you could support other aspect ratios and just fill it with those tiles while only increasing the game's size when the resolution can fit it.
You lose out on a lot of the creative things you can do with the borders in this thread, but it avoid empty space.

This is true.
Crystal, interestingly enough, uses a slightly-modified version of the Super Game Boy's default border despite the game itself containing Gold's border data internally. Meaning this wasn't a placeholder and was intentionally used instead of just making a different-colored variant of the GS border. For some reason.

It's basically a Puyo clone but with colors INSIDE colors that come out when the primary color vanishes. It's a lot more fun than it sounds, if a bit on the easy side.

>My weird dream is to make an SGB game
You'd have to consider the rules on what you can and can't use because if you go too far you're just making a SNES game with extra hassle.
The SGB's base features were the ability to define multiples of 8 pixel rectangles on the screen where you could specify 4 different colors to the base palette. Also sprites could have their own colors too. That's pretty much it.
Most of the other features were really just uploading SNES code through a tiny interfaces between the GB and the SNES and having the code execute natively. Borders and sound effects have no restrictions. If you wanted to upload an entire SPC and have fully snes music and sound, you could. If you wanted to use the SNES CPU as a co-processor, you could do that too. Mode7? Yep.
So really the trick to making an "SGB" game is to decide how far you're going to go and deciding that those are the restrictions you'll adhere to. Most retail SGB games were just borders, tacked on colors and the occasional stock SFX because all the development effort went on the GB game for obvious reasons.

I really like the Pokemon TCG one. The Club Medals don't actually appear when you start a new file, they start off empty and fill in as you get them in game, and then the blue turns gold once you beat the League. Shame literally no one ever plays it on the Super Game Boy because it uses the Game Boy Color's faster processor to have the AI think faster so each individual match is like 2-3x faster on a Game Boy Color.

Iโ€™d keep it basic, but put in more effort. Imagine Metroid 2 where every area features different borders, Color palettes and some background SFX. To make it more atmospheric and for ease of orientation. Wario Land 2 seems to be just that.

Never knew mode7 could be utilised. Canโ€™t imagine how.

That's right, it does. It uploaded it to the SNES RAM and ran it from there. I thought you meant that the SNES CPU and mode 7 could be utilized in the Game Boy game.

It's also possible to run SNES games larger than the SNES's RAM by loading chunks at a time from the Game Boy ROM.

NTA, I was just answering the question on if any games used the SNES CPU in general, didn't know you meant specifically Mode 7 for Gameboy games.

The Game Boy ROM stores extra graphics data that it can send to the Super Game Boy, and it can do it dynamically.
Some games support multiple borders and will change them as you play through the game.
Other games can also support additional color palettes, or even special ones that colorise the game.
Animaniacs even makes use of enhanced audio.

The most notable Super Game Boy title though would be Space Invaders, which actually boots a SNES rom stored inside the Game Boy cart!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKsJokBb9bw
It can also play the Game Boy version with SGB enhancements.

If you set it up in BIOS, the BSNES core in Retroarch can boot GB/C ROMs into SGB1 / SGB2 mode, not just display a border or set a color palette.
You should be able to do the cool shit like boot Space Invaders GB into a full SNES game, or play Animaniacs GB with enhanced colors and sound effects.

It's how I captured >>11782643 >>11782645 >>11782657 >>11782658

Playing in SGB2 mode is preferable by the way, since it has proper timer accuracy.
The SGB1 is known for running GB games slightly too fast. Speed runners disallow stock SGB1 for that reason.
