My favorites are G (only played the arcade version, I know the PSX version has more content though), A, and DrillLand. The rest I played (first game on PSX and GBC, 2 on GBA, and Drill Spirits) are still fun, but I feel don’t have as much content compared to the others.

Start with DrillLand. It’s also the most available one due to the remake/remaster being on PC, Switch, PS4 and PS5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series. It has great variety and multiplayer too if you’re able to play with others. Also, great presentation and amazing music in my opinion. I know you can connect Mr. Driller A with the original GameCube version of DrillLand (transfer your pacteria from A).

Haven’t played this, only know about the main character because of Brawl. But I’m sure this is more of a platformer game compared to Mr. Driller’s puzzle gameplay. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. Really the only similarity is both games heavily involve drilling.

You're probably the person who recommended A to me. I went ahead and bought a copy. I'm still going through 2 though so I haven't gotten around to seriously playing it. I did go as far as trying to clear the previous player's data from it though, which led to the discovery that disconnecting the battery in the cartridge does not erase anything. So the battery supports a clock or something, maybe for tracking Pacteria growth time??? I imagine I'll find out when I finally play it. (I did eventually succeed in erasing the data by simply pressing the right buttons.)

Haven't gotten back to Drill Spirits since I switched from DS to GBA. I wonder how easy that game will seem when I unleash my new GBA-honed skills in combination with the early warning power of the upper screen.

I also tried a few of the arcade games but they were a little too laggy to fully enjoy. I guess my emulation setup is probably imperfect. I don't really care though; the home versions are serving me fine so far.

I never deleted the data on my copy of the game, but interesting about the battery supporting a clock, didn’t now about that. I’ve had my coly of A for about 2 years (got into the series in 2023 after being able to play one of the arcade games in person. Galloping Ghost has a Mr. Driller G cabinet.). I actually haven’t beat 2 on GBA, never got past the second 2000m stage with either Susumu or Anna.
I would say that Drill Spirits is one of the easier games in the series, but 2000m can still be hard. I have a copy of the American version, but that removed some content compared to the Japanese and PAL release (I think due to Namco rushing the American release so that it could come out before Christmas/Black Friday), so I would say download a copy of one of those versions.
All the games I have are physical copies, minus DrillLand in which I have the digital version of the remake on Switch.

PS1 port is less accurate, but has slightly better sound mixing and gameplay (sideways digging is more forgiving) at the cost of graphic fidelity.

Ohh, Galloping Ghost! That’s where I first played Mr. Driller G. And also how I got obsessed with Mr. Driller.
I’m actually going there tomorrow. Even though I spend around half my time there playing Mr. Driller G. I’m lucky enough to be pretty close to Galloping Ghost (about a 25-30 minute drive). Still haven’t beaten 2000m though, though I can partially blame myself for always playing as Taizo as he has the worst air capacity in the game.

The formula is very elegant and it feels good to become skilled at playing. The gameplay can involve a varying amount (according to the player's preferred strategy) of planning and improvisation; it rewards both well. It feels simple and random at first but then you start to discover techniques... maybe if you did that, you would understand? Or maybe you already did and didn't enjoy it, I don't know.

Mr. Driller is a pattern recognition game. As you play, you start noticing the types of patterns of blocks the game throws at you. You get better at dealing with them, predicting how things will drop if you drill that or that. You start doing riskier moves, drilling through brown blocks on purpose or digging underneath their formations, because you know enough brown blocks will connect and release the air capsule to drop straight onto you. Lots of split second decision making and solving tiny puzzles that add up to a bigger whole.
