Bought a SNES a couple months ago after many years without one.
I have been playing through the classics with the aim of finishing them and would like recommendations of what to play next.
So far I've beat:
>Super Metroid
>Super Castlevania IV
>Super Mario World
>The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid is the game which I enjoyed the most, it's insane how ahead of it's time the game is, it's actually incredible. So far it is the only Metroid game I've played, but to think they went from a NES game to that without outside inspiration boggles the mind. It just has so much depth. I feel the same way about LTTP to a lesser extent, still an incredible experience. The only other Zelda game I've beaten is Ocarina of Time which I have a lot of nostalgia for, and until now the 5th and 6th gen of consoles are the generations I have beaten the most games in.
I've been actively playing Donkey Kong Country and am 22% through, and it is also great fun, and can catch you out with more challenge than I expected from it when comparing it with SMW and SMW2. Love the sprites and art direction. Been playing Rock and Roll Racing and Contra III for some arcadey fun but I don't know what to play as the next "big" experience. I was thinking maybe Secret of Mana or Terranigma but not sure. Thoughts?

Just Google "best SNES games". Certain popular alcoholic SNES addict made a decent list.
Anyway, imo Mega Man X is a must play. I prefer DKC2 to 1. These are mandatory.
After that, I heavily recommend Cybernator. I don't take JRPG clowns seriously, Earthbound and SM RPG were ok but FF6 was hilariously bad.
It's all downhill from there. There's still a lot to play, but there's a lot of recs that are far more dependent on taste (e.g. Mega Man 7, Castlevania DX/4 or Kirby's Dream Land 3 which equal amount of people love and hate)

Chrono Trigger is really well made and I reckon is the best snes game. Secret of Evermore is good too, i liked it more than Secret of Mana.

It's time for Chrono Trigger. Easily the best retro JRPG. It's quality game, no random encounter padding, so you can cross it off your list quickly.

In the case of the SNES, the โ€œcanonโ€ best games everyone talks about are indeed the best ones. You can look up any Best SNES Games list and it will be accurate. Once youโ€™ve gotten throw all those (and that will take a while) you can play almost anything by Konami or Capcom and itโ€™s going to be pretty good. I personally recommend the Goemon series. The first one was released as Legend of the Mystical Ninja but the other ones have unofficial translations.

Don't forget about Metroid 2. It may be on an even more primitive console but mechanics-wise it very much feels like a midway point between Metroid and Super.

This but only for SNES JRPGs. I tried FF6 and it was a rollercoaster of laughable writing with no gameplay for the first half part. Tried replaying EB and it's slow as shit. Rest is all a joke, I can't imagine how anyone can sit through FF4 and not fall asleep.
Not even mentioning Mana and BoF, people are finally waking up that these are not """hidden classics""" but just mediocre games.
Only SM RPG was ok, they at least realized regular JRPGs were boring as hell, it doesn't take itself too seriously and had great prerendered graphics.

That's not always the case. Sure, PS RPGs had cutscenes, but they also had plot worth a shit. Imo FF7 > FF6, it's at least a decent story, unlike the clown show of FF6 where you don't care about 90% of the characters. Cloud, Tifa and Aerith became popular for a reason, whereas FF6 characters are mostly famous for what, "guy supplexes a train"?
NES RPGs were at least close to classic RPGs, they were closer to dungeon crawlers, stuff like DQ3 still holds up to this day. DQ5 opened the for 100 hour stories that take 90 hours to pick up, the Japanese ate it up and asked for more

I have started Chrono Trigger a handful of times over the years on Steam but didn't get grabbed by it any of the times. I've never found a true JRPG that has grabbed me and just hooked me in yet. I've played a lot of FFVII on PSX but even though I had fun and it had a lot of soul and I love the graphical style, and even the plot. But something about most JRPGs I've tried over the years just don't hook me with that "this is fucking incredible" thing that many other games do.

Is below your missing post? Looks like maybe it was too long. I tried to repost the whole thing but it was 2004 characters, so 4 over the max. Here is the first half

E.V.O. definitely. Uniracers. Gradius III, Star Fox, SimCity if you aren't deeply deeply offended by the prospect of waiting for very slow old computer chips to catch up with games that demand faster ones.

Action RPG-ish games that you might either love (because they're filled with amazing beauty) or find far too painfully easy and shallow because you're not 12 anymore: Secret of Mana, ActRaiser

Side-scrolling action games that provide a challenge: Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, ActRaiser 2, Majลซล if you can play J games

Pretty good action games with masterpiece soundtracks: Plok, Contra III, and you've already done Castlevania IV

Would be as good as Super Metroid if only there were more of it: Demon's Crest (make sure to try to find everything, and I mean EVERYTHING)

Amazing amazing amazing if you can tolerate collectathon garbage and aren't deeply deeply offended by a baby-crying sound sample, mediocre but still really pretty otherwise: Yoshi's Island

Second half

JRPGs if you're into that: the standard FFIV (original NA version is acceptable though not ideal, romhacks that restore removed content are surely better as long as they don't mangle the script with Internet jokes), FFVI, CT, and if you're doing the flashcart thing then FFV and Rudra no Hihou; also try the remade Romancing SaGa sequels (they aren't the bad kind of remake) but you can't play those on your actual SNES unless you know Japanese

Deep and beautiful, but insanely obtuse and repetitive and ultimately kinda bad, but there's nothing else like it: Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen

Tetris Attack: Tetris Attack (if you're a pedophile stick with the Japanese version, otherwise ignore it)

>>11788427
>Anyway, imo Mega Man X is a must play. I prefer DKC2 to 1. These are mandatory.

Agreed, and also in DKC 2 I encourage you to specifically try to find all secrets because they are cleverly hidden and it's fun. (In the first game, secrets can be fun to find but finding them ALL is not really interesting.)

Same with Chrono Trigger. It's been sitting on my backlog for a decade, never have motivation to actually finish it. I'm convinced that like with EB, half the people never played it, or it's just people who exclusively play Nintendo games playing exactly one RPG in their life and concluding it is the GOAT. Doesn't help that the game is on the IGN top 100 games list, everyone parrots it left and right and it's basically impossible to find objective criticism of this game now. It's a joint choir of Squarefags, Nintendo autists, and tourists drowning out all other voices.
One funny anecdote I have is that I found this gigantic JRPG nerd on YT. Out of curiosity, watched some of his vids. And guess what? He doesn't get Chrono Trigger either.
The older I get, the harder it is to get into JRPGs for me. The only 2 I really liked were Mother 1 and Phantasy Star 2, they at least had gameplay. And I'm not even sure I'll replay Mother 1 now.

I played Chrono Trigger in maybe 2003 or something and thought it was decent. Since then I've played it a few more times and each time it gets better and now I think it's the best game on the system. The story is really well written and the music makes it even better. I had a similar thing with Deus Ex on PC, i thought it was ok the first time I played it but it took a few play throughs to realise how good it was, just all the nuance isn't obvious the first time through. I keep trying Final Fantasy 3 on snes and can't get into it though but will probably try again some time i guess. Same with Earthbound. Maybe if I force myself to finish them I'll like them more when I play them again a few years later like with CT, I don't know.

Yeah that's it thanks. Mostly stuff you'd see in normal top lists plus my babble so it's not that big a deal either way. The size should be fine if you saw it to begin with...? Maybe either janitor disliked my pedophile comment somehow (sorry janitor?? I do acknowledge that abstaining pedos are genuine heroes) or it just got accidentally swept up in the anti-SNES troll cleansing. I don't know what that troll's deal is - every old game platform simultaneously sucks and is excellent. It's so obviously all in the player's perspective. Only a dopey kid would care that this particular one is a little more popular than it probably deserves to be. Goddamn weirdo anti-popularity-justice-warrior 4chan people.

Same here. The classic JRPG problem. If you're the right kind of kid you love the genre better than anything; otherwise you have to somehow squeeze yourself past its gigantic, fundamental flaws to reach what's really good about it. Those are great ones to start with for sure. I'll give my recommendations for the next ones you should try.

>Secret of Mana
It's still one of my favorite games and yes I had it when it came out and played it three player. It was the first action RPG I ever played and beat. Zelda LttP before that was the closest I got. It's flaws IMO are actually some strengths. The combat and gameplay reward loop are so addicting, and I've played it through 100% dozens of times.

>F-Zero
Simple but addicting and very well made. Still holds up today.

>Super Mario Kart
Fucking hard, and not the best now with two player battle mode, but it's where it all started. My favorite way to play it is 2 player GP mode on 150cc. You'll have to work together to even have a chance of winning.

>Star Fox
Once you get past the framerate it's like riding a bicycle and it's so damn good. Great levels, great combat, amazing music. The branching path and shortcuts/secrets allow you so much variety in how you play it.

You've already been looking at Contra III, Chrono Trigger so I'll leave those out. If you like RPGs there is of course FFII, III, Earthbound. All are must plays. For the last, number 5 I'll say Mega Man X. It has the pinazz of Contra III in the Mega Man format. Amazing music, bombastic levels and action. Adds some decent depth to the Mega Man formula from the NES games. Last stage is fucking hard and I've never actually beat the game.

Try a few different ones. SNES emulation is so good now you won't notice the difference between snes9x and bsnes for example. It's like 0.02fps difference. Going for absolute theoretical accuracy is academic.

Personally I like Mesen just because it feels the smoothest. Yes, this is a subjective opinion. But it allows you to lock to 60fps which is SLIGHTLY slower than official hardware by less than 0.1fps, but for modern displays it plays silky af and I value that over accuracy autism.

wtf emulation accuracy isn't measured in framerate you weirdo

In most cases, a more accurate experience will result from more compromised emulation combined with lag reduction and shaders

you don't need cycle accuracy for marios and zeldas

reviewers were absolutely obsessed with tennis games on Snes, I think maybe it was because it was the first type of sport where could be tricked into thinking it was a tv broadcast.
The game I'm playing now is Rushing beat 2, its just a well done Final Fight game. The first is too basic and the 3rd seems like a cheap rushed game.

The Till & Hat is a real nice demo too, it plays a bit like Megaman and has real nice graphics and music, its really hard so I couldn't beat any level.

There are also those Megaman nes ports with cd music too.

I was going to play the Starfox CD romhack but I've only got the old SD2SNES, I wonder if the cheap clones will be the newer version with the better fpga, can't tell for sure.

Shadowrun is good but it's got a steep learning curve and there's a lot of shit that's kind of obtuse in it. Probably worth looking at the manual if you can find it, or just a guide to understand the controls and maybe to point you in the right direction if you get stuck (you probably will).
Other than that it's pretty unique and I like it. Some people prefer the Genesis version (it's a completely different game) but that's their call.

I started this last night in the end, have only played around 30 mins but it seems good, I do think these 16 bit ARPG's do grab me more than the turn based ones, I am liking the art style and this game seems to have a lot of soul.
>F-Zero
Yeah I've played a lot of F-Zero it is good fun but ultimately it's just an arcadey, simple, racing game, the graphical style is very cool though.
>>11789705
I do love Starfox, or Starwing as it was released as here, although I need to buy an actual cart, which is luckily incredible cheap, as my flashcart is a cheapo one that doesn't do SuperFX.
>Super Mario Kart
This one also doesn't work on my flashcart, but again, cheap ยฃ10 game so will inevitably grab a copy soon. I have only played a small amount of the original Mario Kart but the challenge you mention is alluring to me as Mario Kart is incredibly good but piss easy in every incarnation that I have played including the versions I grew up on: Wii version, DS version.

If you beat Yoshi's Island, you don't lose too much with special chip support. Alas, Super Mario RPG uses SA-1. But otherwise, it's mainly Kirby games (I'm in the minority that likes Dream Land 3). Mega Man X2 and 3 use special chips, but these are both considered worse than X1 (which doesn't use chips). That, along with Star Fox and Mario Kart, covers pretty much all the notable special chip games. Except maybe Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Super Street Fighter 2 ports, but really that's a stretch and it's better to play those elsewhere anyway.

>I don't know what to play as the next "big" experience.
Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
It's a localized version of a Goemon game, so no moonrunes required. Long game(has a password feature) with lots of variety. Half of the game is semi-isometric top-down like ALttP, the other half is side-scrolling platforming. Semi-RPGish in nature, you grind up gold to buy items with that you'll want/use in the side-scrolling sections. There's also an arcade in the 3rd level where you can play some Gradius 3 just for the hell of it. Was an early title for the SNES in the US, so it's usually overshadowed by SMW and Castlevania 4, but I'd say it's probably one of the top 10 or top 20 action/platformer titles on the system.
If you have a friend to play with, it supports 2-player co-op.

Yeah I do own Yoshi's Island already, as I grabbed it for ยฃ25 when I bought the SNES, I was unaware of the special chip factor so I am glad I did as I have always wanted to properly play it, having grown up with Yoshi's Island DS. When I bought the flashcart my plan was to return/sell Yoshi's Island but I'm glad I didn't as it's one of the handful I need copies of. Thanks for the QRD on special chip games. Super Mario RPG is a bit of a pain then as it didn't get a PAL release and if my flashcart doesn't support it I'm shit outta luck unless I can find a repro.

Yeah Terranigma is firmly on the list, looks really good and one of the few RPGs on the SNES that were released in the PAL region, but not in the USA, which is interesting. Goemon is a must play
Terranigma is a must play
Chrono trigger is a must play
Secret of mana is a must play
Megaman x is a must play

After that the list falls off unless you love turn based jrpgs like final fantasy then you have tons of slop to consume.

I don't want to just play a bunch of Arcade ports or Sonic mate, thank you. I've owned a Megadrive and there was not a lot of games with much longevity. The SNES has so many classics which provide you with deep and immersive experiences that take many hours to complete and require saving and passwords. The Megadrive/Genesis just has a bunch of arcade games which A: you have to master to have much real fun with, and B: I have the ability to emulate all of those Arcade games in their original Arcade versions, and not a 16bit port.

Thinking MD only has arcade ports is as parody-like as thinking SNES only has RPGs.
These narratives are modern. Both consoles offered a lot of good exclusive platformers (the main genre of the retro era)

Cybernator isn't too long or too hard
Metal Warriors is longer and harder
Gun Hazard is a 30 hours playthrough but it's not hard at all. Gun Hazard feels like one of those story heavy action-RPGs on GBA, you know the era where all the action games had STORY andn RPG ELEMENTS because the era of "the substance is the difficulty" was over as most players didn't want hard games anymore. In fact it feels ahead of its time and it's like the blueprint for this type of games. I'm not saying it's bad though.

>>11793723
It's hard at first but hard in a good way, and once you have the right tactics down it becomes easy to go back to the point where you died. For instance the first really difficulty spike was defending the ship with the Prometheus.... until you realize that the missiles deal a shit ton more damage if you hold the button and hit something with them rather than letting go of the button and letting the shots scatter. Learning this game was a memorable ride.

Spoiler protip: you can bring a back up mech to the final boss, and with some luck and a bit of skill it won't be destroyed before you need it

It seems I can get a boxed copy of Mario Kart for around ยฃ30 so will probably grab one soon and just get boxed versions of all the games with special chips that I can't play on flashcart.

Nice. Boxed SNES games are right up my ally. I was fortunate enough to grow up with them and saved many of the boxes and manuals along with the games. I was also fortunate enough to get on the eBay and swap meet train in the early 2000s. Needlessly to say I have a nice collection now that's worth way more than what I paid.

This one I didn't want to include because isn't just a standard compile shooter that just happens to work well on the SNES?

Gradius III I personally liked. I thought it was an appropriate port and it looks very nice on the SNES, great use of color.

I guess so, but that means it's really, really good.

Gradius III bothers me for the slowdown. Everything else is good, until you get to the part of every Gradius game where if you ever die you might as well start over...

I've just finished terranigma for the first time and I liked it a lot, kinda grindy around the 60% mark but the story is great, music is great and gameplay's good. I actually was about to make a thread about it since trying to make sense of the ending is complicated and I don't find many posts that point to my interpretation of it.

Are you referring to Bloody Mary? Outside if that bullshit the game really never makes you grind in any way. And honestly, grinding for Bloody Mary is just about the worst solution to it as you will be overleveled for the rest of the game. Just push her shit in with magic. No shame in looking that up either as it is pure bullshit.

Because those weapons still do pretty shit damage if you're underleveled. Magic is by far the best way to kill her.
