Why is the PlayStation the only controller with a symmetrical analog layout, to this day?

Wii U had symmetrical sticks, and those pads are like SNES controllers with sticks added on. I mean, just as much as the Playstation controllers are. After no one used the n64 dpad, nintendo seem to have learned a lesson. The saturn 3d pad clearly had the dpad playing second banana to the analog nipple. I think microsoft was just following what sega had done

Nintendo have also used the symmetrical stick layout for the Wii and WIi U controllers.

I think 2D games are better suited for symmstrical while asymmetrical's better for 3D
Wasn't a modular controller tried at some point? That'd probably be one of the better controllers...

It's basically an evolution of the SNES controller, itself an elegant design. Did Sony like steal the plans when the CD-addon fell through?

6th gen was still pretty experimental, Microsoft wanted to make it's control distinct from, but as useful as the dualshock 1, Nintendo wanted to refine the insanity of the n64 controller but still keep its toyetic feel in the market, and Sony liked the design of the DS1, but added pressure imputs. Sega missed the two stick design by being far into development when the ds1 hit the market, but brought the VMU which was pretty novel, if not equally useless ... though many games still got a feature or two out of it.

Sony didn't have to steal any plans when the SNES CD controller was already made by them, like a licensed 3rd party controller.
But they went through a lot of mockups and prototypes before getting the final Playstation controller anyway because they wanted to experiment

>symmetrical analog layout
Bad design. Push your thumbs together on PS2 controller and they collide, interfering with free movement. This spacing wasn't fixed until PS4.

That's entirely on the user though. If you put your thumbs on the opposing sides of the thumbsticks, then they never collide. You'd have to put them dead center on the thumbsticks to get them to do that.

Nature isn't always fully symmetric
Near symmetrical faces are seen as more attractive, but when fully symmetric they look uncanny

Sony tends to more or less stay the course, same reason their consoles are just named PlayStation 2, 3, 4, 5. Not that this is a bad thing (Look at the mess that is Xbox names) but it explains why there haven't been many drastic changes to their controller designs since the DualShock.

That being said, I far prefer the asymmetrical Xbox style layout.

The Dualshock isn't 100% symmetric, by your metric. There's circles instead of D-Pad arrows on the left-side of the controller, so if we're going by your definition, it's nearly symmetric, not fully symmetric.

Sony called dibs on it, simple as that. The others had no choice but to try to be different. If the PSX hadn't existed, the n64 controller would have looked like that.

The post you are replying to was my first and only post in this thread, so I was not judging anything by this metric, just pointing out the nature thing.
Yeah I guess Dual shock or any other mainstream gamepad for that matter is not fully symmetrical, maybe except for the Virtual Boy one - that may even be a part of why it flopped

>Push your thumbs together on PS2 controller and they collide
This doesn't happen. It seems the only way people can criticize PS2 controllers is by concocting obscene physical configurations of which never have any practical use in a game, or admittance to their own unique physical limitations.

Sony took the most popular controller at the time, made a copy, and then added analog sticks, simple.

>nowadays
It worked, it's iconic and associated with the brand, so they don't change it.

That's really all. I'm not complaining though, DualSense is the best controller I've ever held, Sony's good at making controllers.

because the original PlayStation controller was a direct ripoff of the SNES controller, the only thing they changed was hand grips. the analogue sticks had to be placed where they are so as to not change the button layout.

Sony literally has the best controllers every single gen. You don't actually play video games if you think otherwise.

>because the original PlayStation controller was a direct ripoff of the SNES controller
No, it was a direct evolution of the controller, since the PlayStation was going to be a Nintendo/Sony collab before Nintendo decided to be retards and stab Sony in the back, creating a rival who would subsequently dominate them.
>the only thing they changed was hand grips
Extra triggers too
