Apparently the game let you use your save from the main SimCity game so you could race in the city that you built yourself. So basically it's an open world driving game

Vehicular combat was all the rage and everyone wanted to drive around their creations. Why do you think there was a driving mode in Sim City 4? It was a good idea.

They were trying to make lots of old TV show references while also making a game where the map editor is SimCity2000 and SCURK. There was also a scrapped storyline about an alien invasion (Granny's Wild Ride served as a bit of an introduction to that storyline)

But the game ended up running like shit because Maxis ran out of time and money. It was the last game they made before they were sold to EA.

Vehicular combat was super popular. Everything from Carmageddon, Twisted Metal, Destruction Derby, and even vehicle based FPS games like Descent or Necrodome

Simcity 3000 kept getting delayed so they were just building smaller games with the assets they had been accumulating. Still kind of fun to fuck around in. I wish it controlled a little better, at least like RaceDrivin’ good.

SimCity 3000 was also supposed to be a 3D game with polygonal buildings, so it made sense to produce a smaller 3D title to test the waters. Thankfully, 3D SimCity project got cancelled and we got a 2D SimCity 3000 instead.

meanwhile, it's 2025 and we still don't have a GTA style game where you can play in your sim city cities. in multiplayer, with your friends, with randomly generated missions or whatever. we have the technology! civilization has failed us all

In some ways it's taking Sim City full circle since the inspiration for Sim City came from Will Wright realizing he had just as fun using the map editor for Raid on Bungeling Bay as he did playing the actual game.

I bet someone could build a GTA San Andreas map editor based on SimCity 2000 SCURK and this could allow to basically port sc2 maps into GTA and have a full-blown Streets of Simcity sequel.
Or at least find a way to rip Streets of Simcity maps.

I played the shit out of this and SimCopter. Being able to make cities in one game then drive or fly around in them was peak gaming for me.

My parents wanted to destroy the disc when they found out you could mount weapons on your car but my older siblings said that you didn't have to shoot anyone you could just go on a nice sunday drive
I really enjoyed the levitation wheels

My dad almost cried when I had him play aoe and he hit a villager with a catapult . He got up and said "I don't want to play anything with killing in it"
