Any retro JRPGs that comes close to the autistic lore and worldbuilding of Elder Scrolls series?
Lore and worldbuilding is for people who read Wikipedia.
>>11790294Or in-game books and dialogue
>>11790294>people who read Wikipedia. And what's wrong with that???????
>>11790294A story and setting that gets you invested in a game is like seasoning on food. Too much seasoning will ruin the food, but it can always enhance your enjoyment when its done skillfully.
>>11790310Shows you can't read books.
>>11790330That's just good writing and bad writing.
>>11790345Seriously, read a book, I bet you find it overwhelming.
>>11790240 (OP)I am not aware of any. If there is one - then wouldn't it have been left untranslated? Would a publisher have been willing to translate lots of in-game books that most players wouldn't even read? I mean there are certainly JRPGs with lots of text in them... maybe this line of argument isn't very useful? I don't know.
Final Fantasy Tactics had huge chunks of lore removed from international releases.
>>11790325Daisuke ruined it with his retcon in Strive, so no.
>>11790240 (OP)The Trails in the Sky trilogy, which is technically retro.
>>11790294worldbuilding dilutes the oneiric qualities of art
>>11790294Reading wikipedia is fun though
>>11790240 (OP)Xeno and .hack series come to mind as being full of autistic worldbuilding
>>11790294Agreed, leave that shit to your dungeon session, it’s unnecessary in a video game.
>>11791450Explain
>>11791457tabletop rpg nerds complain about excessive worldbuilding too, the GM waffling about random details instead of getting to the game
>>11790335How so?
>>11790359Reading certain Wikipedia articles is more productive than reading flavor of the week fantasy slop
>>11790294It's not, though I see how you're trying to diminish well done world building. Wikipedia has so w topics fleshed out and others completely blank. It's an encyclopedia of the userbase, where as lore and world building is a developers endeavor that is enjoyed by the userbase. There's tons of fun to be had by engrossing yourself in a well developed world. I don't always enjoy reading text boxes and more than not I'd rather play an arcade game or something that's instantaneously fun, but I do get a lot out of games that take time with their world.... As long as it's well done. Elder scrolls lore is great, or was great I should say. From daggerfall to oblivion, the world building was top notch (Skyrim is ok, I don't hate it). Fallout, mgs, Zelda(even though it's more convoluted than mgs lore), ultima, etc... all have great world building and/or lore. May not be your cup of tea, but doesn't make it not true. Id also add that MegaMan, sonic and mortal Kombat lore are wild to learn about, despite them not being overtly thought of as lore heavy games at a first glance.
>>11791574>Reading certain Wikipedia articles is more productive than reading flavor of the week fantasy slopYou know they make books about the subjects of Wikipedia articles, yes?
Most people who complain about worldbuilding and lore are usually thinking about badly done ones, where it's exposition and loredumps ungracefully dumped onto you as the writer is jerking off his own genius
>>11791745Isn't the hyperfocus on shit no one cares about what you dislike about though
>>11791753I see the problem. You are retarded and cannot write a coherent sentence, which pairs badly with reading anything above a 6th grade level. Sorry.
>>11791771Sounds like a you problem buddy, all my posts are peer reviewed
in which in ancient days, there was once a great titan. Then, when the ancient titan perished, it's body formed the world of Forcelia, and from it's appendages, formed the gods. Six would become the rulers of the world, along with governing the minor gods and the creatures formed from the Titans remains. The fey then appeared and sought to forge a world for themselves, with the permission from the gods, they began a partenership. Then, humanity arrived. Despite their short lifespans, they sought to make the most of it and become the gods most devout.
Then, one of the ancient gods, Phlaris, turned upon his brethren and brought upon the war of the gods. With the intervention of the great drakes, the gods bodies were destroyed and their spirits sent to the realm of the divine. The final battle of this war was between the two remaining gods. The Ancient Goddess Marfa and the Wicked Goddess Kardis. Their clash would scar the land, forcing the gods into a stalemate and tainting their battlefield. This land would then break off from the Alecrast continent and then be henceforth be known as "Lodoss, the Accursed Island."
Many years had passed and Humanity had become wizened, with some developing the ability to channel the power of the gods, the fey, and even the very force of reality itself to their beck and call. These Rune Masters would then establish a great empire, stretching far and wide. This great empire would be known as Kastuul, the Land of Mages. However, great empires would never last and within the span of a day, the empire of Kastuul collapsed.
From there on, the oppressed and the wildlings sought to take back their rightful lands and form great kingdoms of their own. This was an era forged by the sword, and with the sword, they named this time the Age of Sword, thus: "Sword World."
>>11792161>and from it's appendages, formed the gods>Six would become the rulers of the worldheh, which one was the dick
>>11792161just lord of the rings. but with a slight greek flavor.
>>11790240 (OP)Pokemon is really the only one.
>>11792403really, most of it was thought up by Mizuno, but I think some of the other players of the original Lodoss campaign added into it.
>>11790240 (OP)Japs don't do super-autismbuilding like Westerners.
>>11790240 (OP)Unfortunately not, there was a lot of room for shit like this with the impossibly large amounts of space afforded by the Sega CD/ PC Engine CD but almost no games took real advantage of the format.
>>11793462Yeah the west used to be very methodical, only a westerner can write something like LOTR, but today, it feels like they suddenly were replaced by another people, everything they make is sloppy.
>>11790439eh, i've never took a retcon seriously. they're always bad and a jump the shark flag.
>>11791775this, but the older the games, the most awful the gameplay.
>>11794618Rance is hard to get into, they're mostly not translated
>>11790240 (OP)If by "autistic" you mean "lazily ripped from from a myriad other sources and poorly pastiched into a single IP", Shin Megami Tensei.
>>11795660i think only the last one is still missing.
>>11795812SMT was close before Hashino's Persona games polluted the series, he keeps copying JoJo and Evangelion, basically what you described.
>>11794618>older the games, the most awful the gameplay.>>11795660>not translated.just play the remakes? i thought they got officials and are sold online? also Brutal King.
point is, Rance characters and its world packed tons of lore. you can just read the fan-made wiki if you don't play them. even the side-characters get enough lore to make their own game series. too bad their dev is always poor and never had budgets to make spinoffs like Squeeenixsoft.
>>11795812this is accidentally a more appropriate suggestion than you intended given kirkbride's DUDE KALPAS. SMT goes hard on the buddhaslop on their neutral routes
>>11790240 (OP)Do any have lore at all? It's not like they had books to read in JRPGs or anything. You might get some mention of something or other in the dialogue if it's quest related.
No, the answer is no. Ultima VII had 144 books, for instance. And tons of artifacts from previous games. Morrowind had slightly more than that, as well as artifacts. Oblivion even more, Skyrim even more than that.
They didn't have the ROM space for one. With the PC it's just text on a disk, with a cartridge you have to budget for everything much more tightly. But even once the CD era came around they didn't pick up on worldbuilding and lore.
>>11792183Y'know, I have yet to know, mayhaps either a wicked lust god or a god of love.
Or maybe the primordial titan didn't have such... ...parts.
