It was trash, a lot of early PS2 mods were. There is a reason people forgot it ever existed even before the PS3 came out.

unless that somehow autoinstalled mechapwn on compatible ps2 models, it's physically impossible for that to enable burned psx games

Apparently not, it's quite an interesting piece of tech with a lot of limitations.
>The mod USB key and wire bridge authenticated pirated backups as if they were PS1 discs, which allowed the action replay disc to perform the second bit of wizardry: forcing the console into thinking the backup was a PS2 CD.

anon, they're gaslighting you, if the usb interacted with the psx subsystem at all then there would be modern hacks exploiting that, instead your only options that don't require hardware modifications are mechapwn on later ps2 models and disc swap/tonyhax

You realize this is a "modchip" from over 20 years ago right? It's not a new product or one that has been sold anymore for nearly two decades. Nobody is trying to "gaslight" anyone with this crappy modchip that was quickly forgotten.

modchips are hardware mods, something that interacts with the usb would be a softmod, there are no softmods to play psx backups on a ps2 besides mechapwn, this magical device from 20 years ago didn't have some arcane secret that no later dev/group was able to uncover and exploit

Neo Key required a hardware modification in addition to the USB device. So basically it was the worst of both worlds, you still had to solder shit to your mobo and you needed an external device, and even after all that all it did was make it easier to perform a classic disc swap.

Give it a try yourself and report back, the files are out there to make your own clone of it

i don't have proof for this, but once you get the ps2 into ps1 mode, it's free game.
ps2 side checks if the disc is legit, once it does it goes into ps1 mode and you are good to go.

It's literally just this, you're soldering a jumper to short the tray ejection mechanism so you can open it without going through the normal process. The USB device is just a button. You're literally just making it easier to disc swap the PS2 since otherwise you have to use a tray key which is a pain in the ass.

There are no obscure hacks going on here. It's no different than just disc swapping a real PS1.
