Alright you Afghan mattresses, give me the best 16-bit or older and portable strategy games.
And I don't mean no sissy SRPGs, I mean WAR, with people thrown into the meat grinder, not your anime pretty boy can flank the enemy sometimes.

Just play any fucking Koei game.

If you want portable can't get better than Game Boy Wars, but Nobunaga's Ambition was put out on the DMG.

What's that? You don't want Jap crap? Keep up with the Commodore 64 then. You want to play Raid on Bungeling Bay, North and South, M.U.L.E., and Silent Service. (I'm pretty sure you can find all them on the IBM if you'd rather DOS game.)

If you just want to play shooty shooty, you have Radar Mission on the Game Boy (2 modes; one mode is a good war simulator), Battleship on the SNES, 688 Attack Sub on the Genesis, and while speaking of the Genny there's a fan translation of Advanced Daisenryaku.

And you know what, play Battlezone on the 2600.

Nectaris is horribly underrated but the best way to beat the maps were hitting enemies from max range after luring them in. no need to grind anyone or make hard decisions.

Desert commander was the first of the genre I ever played when it came out in 1989. It was the 8-bit panzer general of its time. Didnt have the depth of pc war stategy games but it was fun as fuck.

I'm also gonna be a faggot and suggest Civ 1 or 2 on the boomer console of your choice, since that's a good series for you to get your meat grinder fix. Everything else I have to suggest has already been done by the other anons ITT. Super Famicom Wars from your OP image is good too, but you already knew that.

I can't believe I've been so brain damaged by years of looking at NATO counters in HOI and hexshit grognardslop that I can look at an Atari screenshot of scattered boxes and instantly tell what's going on
