How was Nintendo able to build a cult following of grown-ups obsessed with everything they produce? Emulation, ROM hacking, and PC ports mainly focus on Nintendo’s work, while things related to Sony or Microsoft often get much less attention.

Nintendo is often compared to Apple, because they also have a "cult" of a brand. But at the same time, it's worth noting 2 points:
1) Nintendo managed to keep all of its IPs going for 30+ years, without really sinking any of them. In fact, 3D Mario and Zelda arguably peaked in recent years. This keeps their "cult" of the brand extremely strong.
You want to know what happens otherwise? Look at Sega. All of their fame and cult following is virtually dead. Hell, it's worse than that, people shit on OG Sonic because of 2006 onward era.
Then look at some Sony IPs. Crash, Spyro, Jak, MGS, FF, THPS etc. are either dead, in limbo, simply irrelevant or heading to it, living from 1 remake to another.
2) Sony / MS IPs are often disjointed and hardly even associated with Sony / MS. Like, is GTA "Sony"? Is DMC "Sony"? I remember how Sony attempted a Smash clone, and it just didn't work out. In fact, Sony readily abandoned half of their mascots before. And MS has what, Halo?....
Nintendo characters are very much connected to them. This is why you have a very strong brand image and "cult" attached to them. It's almost like Ronald McDonald and McDs, you start brainwashing kids early and burn Mario/Link/Pikachu into their brains.
This is why Nintendo is far more of a cult than Sony/ MS will ever be. Sony already FAFO'd with PS3 and learned that when someone produces a cheaper shitbox, people will ditch them faster than you can say "599 us dollars".

Two people were more likely to share more of their respective libraries on N64 than they did on PS1. Everyone who had an N64 also had Goldeneye and Mario 64, but many PlayStation owners had never even heard of Spyro or Twisted Metal.
This lead to Nintendo fans creating communities that shared a lot more experiences, which ended up becoming a little cultish to the tune of Disney adults.
You can see this here too. More general N64 threads than threads about specific N64 games, and almost no general PS1 threads but plenty of threads about specific PS1 games.

I hate this meme. Less than half of n64 owners had Super Mario 64 and only a third owned goldeneye. There are tons of people who had the system and never played either of these games.

Meanwhile on PS1 only 1 in 10 owned the most popular game, Gran Turismo.
More importantly a hell of a lot more games managed to sell 1 million+ copies. 50 games on N64, more than 120 games on PS1.
Frogger 2 Swampy's Revenge sold more copies than any of the three Mario Party games on N64. And ain't fucking nobody talking about Frogger 2 anywhere.

>How was Nintendo able to build a cult following of grown-ups obsessed with everything they produce?

Families with overbearing, helicopter, or hyper religious parents tended to buy Nintendo because they were the “family friendly” console.

These kids were also more likely to be autistic shutins which led to Nintendo not only having the most autistically dedicated fan base on the internet, but also the most disgustingly perverted coomers. Seriously, the shit Nintendo fans put out nowadays trumps anything the sonic fanbase did at their worst.

I will say though that closer to my 30s I started trying to get out of my comfort zone more. But I took an extended break from gaming in my 20s, only recently got a handheld so there's that.
But you really have to be a retard to still fight console wars at 40. While I prefer Nintendo to Sony and Sega, I recognize that all 3 have good and bad games, plus it's largely down to taste, and their consoles are all at the very least 7/10. I've tried the famous PS1/Genesis games, I liked some but others didn't grab me as much. At least I can form an educated opinion about games instead of hating on games I haven't even played. Hope you can do the same.

Nintendo is a top-tier first-party developer, AND a platform holder, AND the only platform holder ever to consistently play around with hardware design in major ways. Microsoft has a very strong identity in the software world, but in gaming it's little more than one more generic option that's characterized by how it follows others (mimicking Nintendo sometimes, leeching off the PC gaming world in some ways, conservatively jockeying to keep up with Sony). Sony at least managed to make a few successful handheld platforms, but otherwise is much the same as Microsoft, plus a little bit of extra Japanese weirdness. Why wouldn't the most interesting company by far be the one that people latch onto the most strongly? If you watch Nintendo, PC gaming, and I guess cell phone gaming, you'll observe just about everything important that happens in the video game industry. Who cares about the followers, unless you own some of their stock or something?

If you want to play a Nintendo game then just play it. If you find yourself hating the company so much that you can't enjoy the game, then... keep playing anyway, and don't enjoy it. It's not like you're going to be arrested for failing to enjoy a game you think you should enjoy. As you gradually get used to this experience, your brain should eventually tire of robotically pumping out hate juice, and eventually you'll see a Nintendo game as just one more game. Source: am a neuroscientist with zero training, experience, publications, or accreditation. Anyway seems worth a try.

Believe it or not, Nintendo are still making good games, and relatively plenty of them, unlike most other once-beloved companies who do nothing but churn out remake after remake of their past hits because they can't produce a new one if their life depended on them.

Because even though people meme about there being a gorillion Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and Kirby games, Nintendo doesn't actively fuck up the value inherent to their IPs the way other companies have. Eidos is a good example of this because they were trying to turn all of their series into yearly releases in the late 90s/early 00s, which led to subsequent goose-killing for the likes of Tomb Raider, Thief, Deus Ex, and Kain, and their development teams going under because those guys couldn't churn out entire games like they were Madden roster changes.

They went hard on protecting, promoting, and creating a long legacy for for their IPs. Other consoles just mostly just focused on high end tech which has major diminishing returns

The sad thing is that there were other companies that I thought of as being similar to Nintendo in the sense that they had decades of beloved and recognizable IPs and characters, enough to make mass crossover games with them. That would be Konami, Capcom, maybe Namco.
Yet they've all gone to shit, Capcom only cares about Monhun and RE, Namco only makes Tekken, Konami literally doesn't make games anymore. So many companies threw away their older bing bing wahoo characters while Nintendo stayed true to theirs, now they're as beloved as Mickey Mouse or Hello Kitty.

In the past, it was a given to see Sega games on best games of all time lists. Sonic, including CD and SA1/2, Gunstar, Saturn games like Nights, VF2, Sega Rally/Daytona, Dragon Force, and DC stuff like Soulcalibur and Shenmue.
Now almost all of that got erased, except for Shenmue because of muh open world. Saturn lost almost all of its reputation, people don't even know what Dragon Force or Guardian Heroes are. Only weebs care about it because of JP only jarpigs and 2D powerhouse meme. Genesis was once seen as pretty much an equal to SNES, now it gets less and less acclaim while SNES has been de-facto crowned the king of 16 bit era (and arguably retro era as a whole). DC is often reduced to a footnote of history, and I don't need to tell you what happened to SA1/2.
You could call this revisionism in action, but to be fair, where are Sega fans now? It's pretty clear most of Sega kids moved on long ago, there's just select few oldfags left on forums like this one. And there's no new generation of Sega kids, the closest you have is zoomers who grew up with Sonic Boom. Guess you could count Sonic community, but it's obviously a joke in itself.

They made good games with memorable characters and didn't go out of buisness along the way. Sega could have done similar with the exception of the last part.
Rare, Capcom and Konami were all capable of reaching the same levels of popularity, but lacked a dedicated home system presence to put them into their own similar league. Sony could have became a Nintendo if they had actually decided to cultivate their popular IPs in the PS1 and 2 days and bought out series like Crash, Spyro and Tomb Raider.

That's why, for raging fucks like you, I said A R G U A B L Y.
I'll just say that BotW objectively has been a critical and commercial success. It's the best selling game in US Nintendo has had in ages. It also has excellent scores, to the point that IGN called it the best game of all time. And btw—remember that after Skyward Sword, 3D Zelda had been at a very bad place.
About same for Odyssey, just a critically acclaimed game, today for many it's a strong contender for the title of the best 3D Mario.
And this goes for their other IPs too. Animal Crossing went from that cute GC game only nerds cared about to a household name. Smash used to be big, but now even people who are outside of Nintendo bubble are well familiar with it. Mario Kart? Again, could be at its peak.
Whether these are the best games in their series is subjective, but my point was, these were definitely high points for the series, certainly not low. Many in this thread have already said it—so many other companies have fucked up their big IPs; Nintendo is a stark contrast to that, that's why their cult following didn't die.

>blaming Snoy and Microshart for Sega's own ineptitude.
That's a take I haven't personally seen before. They could have stuck it out and actually tried to sell Dreamcasts. The system was good and forward thinking, maybe they should have realized how big the US market was for games. I remember the announcement that Sega was going to stop making consoles and a lot of people said Sega was going to die out quickly after that. They did in a way, they're a shadow of what they once were, so many good franchises that haven't seen a release in 25 years. I played Sega branded games on PS2 and Xbox, had a Genesis as my only console growing up, where are they now? Why has it been a quarter of a century since Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, etc? Why isn't PSO1 on Steam? It's like they hate making money.
Sega GT 2002 should have just been Sega GT since those buckets never made another one.

Ah, the Western gamer. So *adamant* about their "hardcore" tastes, devouring Hollywood-grade slop masquerading as gaming. They sneer at Nintendo, dismissing it as "kiddy" and "overrated." The irony, of course, is exquisite. They champion their supposed sophisticated palate, yet invariably discover that Japanese games, while seemingly simpler, possess a depth and polish that leaves their own creations sputtering. And the players? Japanese gamers consistently outperform their Western counterparts, a testament to something beyond mere skill. It's almost as if... *gasp*... Asian proficiency exists. Then, the inevitable realization dawns: Japan adores Nintendo. The Western gamer's carefully constructed facade crumbles, replaced by a pathetic display of... well, something. Something akin to a toddler throwing a tantrum. Quite frankly, amusing.
