Crash 1 still looks so damn appealing... my favorite 3D platformer to this day.

P.S. Tawna's fucking hot and N. Brio knew what he was doing.

the thing is the 64 which i had and loved could never do something like this. i can't believe this screenshot is even from that era it just has so much color depth and contrast. even like pc games that i picture from 1999 etc look washed out compared to this. though maybe this pic is enhanced by emulation or something i dunno

(not to mention the shading - it almost looks like a pre-render - but of course the game is fuckin 1-D, with a camera on a fixed track, so in a sense it is largely pre-rendered. It cheated, but I'm still impressed. literally it does look like 32-bit color depth vs 8-bit pallets or something, which ironically op tried to mock)

Cheating is copying someone else's answers, not coming up with a solution on your own.

Another thing I've noticed is that later PS1 games looked significantly better than the earlier ones, but that isn't true for N64 games. Like the difference between Crash 1 & 3 is huge, but the there's barely no difference between Ocarina Of Time and Majora's Mask

huh? the idea of 'cheating' here refers to the way that if your game didn't move at all, you could upload a beautiful film frame to the screen and it would look good but you aren't having to actually render anything. a fixed camera just means having a character on top of a well-composed image. a camera that moves in freely in three dimensions means whatever can't be composed nicely, can't have the shading chosen so the overall image has a nice eye-pleasing balance of light and dark like op pic. if your camera is on a track, even in a 3D world, you can consider these things again. you can apply artistry to each viewpoint that will occur.
Every frame in the game can be posed to back-of-box screenshot level where everything lines up nicely, whereas free camera games just have to kind of flip through a huge pile of screenshots in the hope that one looks like that

Going from crisp pixel art to this was a painful experience. Which I guess is why I found the Saturn more appealing back then.

No consensus, but Crash 1 seems like the most popular entry recently. Warped seems to have the most people who thinks itโ€™s the worst (Iโ€™m one of them). Could just be vocal minority though.

I think 2 is the worst just because of the jetpack sections. 3 has a bunch of gimmicks but not a single one of them is a cancerous as that one

I think Warped gets a bit too much only near the end when you get the bazooka and it becomes a proto-Jak2. I don't even hate the minigames and find them very nostalgic.

2 is probably the best for me.,

I don't like the jetpack levels neither, but there's only 2 of them, while Warped's gimmick levels are like a third of the game.
