Why was the German vidya scene so damn weird? Can't believe their most successful games back in the day were a franchise of chicken hunting games and its zillion spinoffs (crazy chicken wanted, crazy chicken soccer...etc) and knock-offs. Their chicken obsession even reached the realm of board games with Feiges Huhn. That's not even getting into the endless copy-and-paste simulators. Is it really all due to the heavy censorship that was reserved for any game that was dealing with ''mature'' content? Are there any krautanons that could tell us what it was like to game under those conditions? Any war stories?

No one gave a shit because everyone just pirated. Do you really think anyone in their right mind played censored versions of games? lmao

Apparently Moorhuhn was so popular that it even had a song that managed to get on the pop charts

No, that's literally the problem, themes of violence/conflict/war were taboo in Germany

and now German cinema is full of WW2 and GDR slop. But from a personal perspective.

German vidya was always strong in the management genre. Figures. Some good strategy games and a few good RPGs and action games, basically what >>11794123 wrote.
Censorship has little to do with the content German devs made, imo. There was a huge swath of "funny" or zany games, in every genre and a surprising amount of erotic content, with that German humor/zaniness attached. It was a wild west in the 90s and there were loads of basement/grassroot developers pushing out their stuff, just like the Bri'ish Speccy devs from the 80s. German nerd humour included.
I just think there was no demand for violent games, but rather a longing for complex sims and management games.

German law forbade any games that showed violence against humans or Nazi symbols, so you get stuff like this.

Moorhuhn was just a freeware game every normie played.
It's comparable to a viral flash game the whole office played.

Germans are just like Japanese they're autists who like "thinking" games rather than going around and beating people up or shooting things.

Speaking of german flash games, I remember one in particular that consisted of shooting down an oncoming swarm of ugly ass flies. It had an artstyle that somewhat similar to Road Rash's. Would love to find its name again.
