I have nothing against Ys and Falcom but honestly all those new Ys games are nothing special. They are serviceable ARPGs but they are somewhat forgettable. At times they even feel like they were made by AI

You know when I was young I thought bump combat was really stupid, but nowadays I think it's fucking brilliant. It really is the Action RPG reduced down into its purest form, though I do think Ys 2 is better with the addition of a magic button to shoot fireballs and shit. Goes well with running shit over in melee.

I don't know if the PC88/98 versions are translated but those versions are the best. PCE version looks worse and sounds worse but it has a fun new intro and some character portraits.

totally agree. always wished they added something else to shake it up a bit but it really is a distilled form of realtime combat that I appreciate and I wish more JRPGs did stuff like this instead of continuing the turn-cringe combat tradition for eternity

It's random whether he turns vulnerable or not and he can make himself unkillable if he doesn't transform enough. That said, when he solidifies you just bump one of his corners and turn away from him, don't get greedy. But even if you do everything right you can still die if he doesn't cooperate.
