Just play some N64 games with it. Yeah, itโ€™s not ideal, but it works fine with every game designed with it in mind. I can see this and know right away how u want to grab it. Left and middle for shooters, left and right for 2d platformer, middle and right for everything else, feels good in the hands no matter what. Not a perfect controller, but Iโ€™m convinced anyone who claims itโ€™s some completely unwieldy device has never actually used it.

PS1 and Saturn didn't even have a SINGLE analog stick. 64 was ahead of its time. No wonder why it was the king of FPS games during that era.

seeing the 64 controller reminds me of comfy childhood gaming with friends and family. yes it's hard to go back to that stick, but it doesn't matter when you're having fun with others

It's actually a really good controller, very few games used the D pad and I don't know of any that used both the D pad and analog at the same time.

In those days analog was mostly used for flightsticks anyway. Have a picture of a controller that was an analog controller from 1989. I have no idea if the people who designed the N64 controller knew about it or not.

It's not my favorite controller, but it has it's positives, for me mainly how the button layout feels like a perfect mixture of Nintendo/Sony's diamond and SEGA's arcade layout, I wish this had become the standard, XBOX tried it, but wasn't as good, Nintendo 64 was the closest this layout was to being perfect, I'm glad we're getting some modern takes recently at least, it's nice.

I used to do that all the time for Perfect Dark. That's why I hate N64 controllers that try to put everything onto two handles like this: >>11795172

You can instead buy an OEM with a USB adapter, or even an NSO controller. It's good that there's options.

At launch
The Saturn got a superior analog stick before the N64 even launched in the US
The PS1 got two superior analog sticks the next year

You didn't read the next sentence. N64 was ahead of its time because Sony and Sega didn't think to put sticks on their controllers until they saw the N64.

Kek, also don't forget to flip the switch on the bottom or else it won't work.

Wrong. PS1 had flight sticks at launch that were analog. Descent used it. The dual shock was based on that design rather than N64's.

Yes, superior. Hall effect analog is just as accurate as infrared sensor analog on the N64, but much smoother and doesn't turn the base into parmesan the more you use it.

It feels like the PSP nub, only stiffer and not as shitty. I actually played Nights with it and always felt it would play better with an N64 stick rather than an areola.

in what way does it fail to live up to the expectations of a 5th gen launch controller? the way you hold it in the default position might have your hands slightly too close together, that's it. otherwise it has an analog input, two reachable shoulder buttons, and a reasonable 4 way camera pad. the only real problem with it is the analog stick having durability issues.

>I don't know of any that used both the D pad and analog at the same time.
the infuriating thing about the n64 controller is that it really had an opportunity to have its cake and eat it too, only one stick but with the left dpad any shooter could have been directly translated from wasd+mouse, the one instance where this actually would have made sense in terms of controller design(a middle placed ambidextrous analog stick). however with only two reachable buttons few devs bothered, 9.5/10 you're forced to use the awkward right c button dpad and aim with your left thumb

That controller + Project 64 on a PC is perfectly viable.
I use an Xbox 360 controller with every emulator though. Stay mad.

Is there a single reason to use an n64 controller if you're okay with remapping buttons? I have an insane amount of nostalgia for the console, but the controller is bafflingly bad.

>left and middle for shooters
This always felt terrible for me, even "back in the day". I only managed to enjoy Sin and Punishment after remapping the controls on a modern pad - but that just feels like cheating in a way.
