>LucasArts took a look at this and said "nah fuck that we can make a better port ourselves"
They were right. Total kusoge and as a final insult it has a password save with some of the longest passwords of any Famicom game.

You can't name ONE Japanese port of a western game that wasn't completely butchered and ruined.

Not one.

Sure not those NES ports of Lode Runner and Boulder Dash at any rate. I can't complain about CRPG ports on the NES too much most were reasonably ok despite some necessary compromises due to the hardware, unless they were Ultima ports in which case no.

NES got ports of Ultima 3-4-5, Might & Magic 1, Wizardry 1-3, Pool of Radiance, Bard's Tale 1-2. Yeah the Ultima ports are...nah. M&M1 was really good and the Wizardrys were ok but they nerfed the difficulty some to be more child friendly. The two Bard's Tales were pretty good as far as I know despite US BT1 having half the game chopped out.

Some seem to like the SNES version of Prince of Persia, though personally I prefer the original.

ha ha Famidaily went into a lengthy expose about what a train wreck Maniac Mansion was. you could tell the Japanese totally did not "get" the game's sense of humor at all. he also said there's some nasty bugs in there like the game locked up when he tried replaying the tape recording of the tentacle mating call record. since the game only got one printing i assume those bugs were never fixed.

We had a thread before about the FC port of The Law of the West. It's not a bad port per se but totally flopped over there because too violent for Japanese tastes.

This game is kind of notable for being one of the only UNROM-256 games, I think there were only like 4 in total.

As anon said they're a little easier than the computer versions to be more accessible to kids. The game auto-saves after each battle you win (so no legging it back to the inn at the start of the maze to save) and you can't die from old age if you take too long to finish.

All the text descriptions had to be shortened to the extreme in the NES versions. I don't know if it's better if you play the Japanese versions but the English language NES versions are definitely inferior to the originals.

The Japanese knew how to make RPGs, non surprisingly.

As far as I can tell the NES/FC Might&Magic does not lack ANY content from the other versions, and even adds some stuff; and it has some of the best graphical and musical/sound presentation of any versions of the game
The only down side are a couple of bugs (the US version fixed them while adding the Locust Plague bug which is a nasty one)
