When does it start being fun? I'm about 5 hours in, just got to Cairo, it sucks.

If you're 5 hours in and not having fun, I'd say bail. Unless you really want to know how the plot lines wrap up it's probably not worth it. Most would agree that it's inferior to the original Deus Ex in almost every way so if you haven't played that go for it instead.

It doesn't, don't slog through it unless you're a Deus Ex megafan who needs to beat it at least once

All the areas feel so small compared to DX1. "Seattle" is a joke, it's just a couple of tiny rooms. And the constant loading screens are annoying. Feels like a mobile game or something.

It's because the game was made for consoles too.

Yeah i've played a few more hours now. Got to Germany. It still sucks. I think I'm just going to watch a speedrun or something to see the rest of it.

I just read that it was apparently made for the original X-Box and that's why it is the way it is, with the tiny levels and constant loading screens and everything being dumbed down. And it's like they upgrade the graphics in some parts, maybe the textures and lighting etc, but the environments and character models are really generic and boring looking and the proportions of things seem off sometimes. Like this woman at the start of the game in the picture, standing there almost in a t-pose like an idiot

that is the a-pose which is how people started modelling characters after they realized it was unhelpful to start with such a rare shoulder position when trying to make the neutral undeformed model. so yeah if people are actually in the game like that, that is them t-posing in-game

so the game is meant to be played on a SD tv? this looks like high quality graphics (shadows, shading) but like 240p res. Which would make some decisions about e.g. the character's cartoon bug eye faces, make more sense. So you could actually see their eyes. (still ugly)

the picture was a screenshot from a youtube longplay I just grabbed, it's of the X-Box version. I set it to 720p but it still looked pretty blurry. On PC it looks a bit better than that but the models still look silly, the higher resolution doesn't make much difference to anything in terms of model or environment quality.

In DX1 a lot of NPCs would run up to you and talk to you and I think that made it a bit more realistic, or at least took attention off the models a bit. In this game though a lot of them just stand there like that. And some times there's ones that do move but it doesn't really make any sense. Like right at the start of the game the building you're in seems to be exploding or something like it's about to collapse and there's this military leader guy running laps on an indoor running track while all these explosions are going off and you have to talk to him and it's just a weird situation. There's a lot of weird design decisions that break the immersion a bit.

i wasn't saying anything about the character (which is a-posing as i said in another post - the character pose is fucked, the characters are fucked in this game) i was saying maybe it looks better at low res and i kind of feel backed up by this comparison

Yeah some rooms look decent. That room in particular. And the top floor of the Archology. Compared to something like Ocean Lab in DX1 though they're so tiny, like 2% of the size and a lot less detail.

if you go in with console expectations, you'll be pleasantly surprised
keep in mind open areas at that time were a novel idea
No, it obviously doesn't hold a ghost of a candle to its predecessor but its a quaint, tight, bite sized imsim you can finish in a day.

Ok. I finished it. It sucks.

It took about 11 hours. Maybe 1/5 of that is waiting for load screens and restarting after crashes. It crashed probably 15 times or something, sometimes blue screen. The last stage is the only interesting one, it's Liberty Island from the first game and Unatco is there and stuff, but it's all empty and there's nothing to do and it looks way worse than the original.

The story isn't awful but it's not really interesting either. Some of it is stupid though, like apparently after DX1, JC merged with Helios and then babysat the grey aliens for 20 years and now he hangs out with aliens and wants to put a brain implant in everyone's head in the world. Some parts of story are barely explained at all, like the opening cutscene of the game there's this grey goo that consumes Chicago but it doesn't really get mentioned again so I don't know what that was about.

DX1 is my favourite PC game so I was hoping IW had at least some of that same stuff and it kind of does but it's boring and ugly and tedious and it sucks and I think I would have been better off just reading the plot summary on wikipedia instead of playing it.
