Just an extremely fun game, with a lot of genuinely good puzzles that stump me on several occasions. The Ancient Cave is awesome as well, so you’re basically getting 2 awesome RPGs. It’s something of an early roguelite in that you can keep some items you get and use them in your later attempts. Also cool this has something similar to limit breaks and the “abilities attached to equipment mechanic” from FF IX. A very innovative JRPG for its time.

its pretty standard. you can mostly just mash A to select attack for everyone and get by. depending on grind or not, you might want to have the ladies cast a spell on all enemies instead. equipment usually carries special abilities that use a bar that gets filled by taking damage, and that might get used during boss fights.

the battle system isnt really anything special, but the dungeon exploring is the real meat and fun of the game. the dungeon puzzles kick the shit out of zelda games. while most of them arent exactly "hard", there is a lot of variety in what you find and how you go about things, and some puzzles are genuinely difficult.

Ancient Cave does REALLY test your knowledge of the game mechanics and especially resource conservation though.
The main campaign of the game is overall pretty easy as far as battles go, but that also gives you an opportunity to use the hell out of the spells and see their cool animations over and over.
I like the ones that summon monsters to obliterate your enemies. Like Firebird, Dragon, Ice Valk
