I've played Duke 3d, Forever, Time to Kill, Land of the Babes and Zero Hour.
Duke 3d is probably my favorite, can't beat that fast high octane gameplay. After that it's probably Zero Hour, the ps1 games are a little too slow and clunky but still enjoyable for me to a degree and Forever is so generic I don't even remember it.

Duke 3D is most definitely the best. Duke 2 is still fantastic, Manhattan Project is probably one of the best "2D" dukes and Zero Hour is probably the best out of all the weird time-traveling third-person shooters. why the fuck were there so many third person duke games involving time travel?

I really hope the new Duke Forever leak mogs the 2001 leak from a couple years back. I heard from several sources from 3D Realms that a build from late 2002 was more complete than the 2001 builds, and I feel concerned the 2003 builds OP is teasing was when the game restarted development and a good chunk of content from the 2002 era was thrown away. I just want something more complete.

2003 is just a more complete 2002 with the addition of a new lighting engine. all the levels should be just more complete 2002 levels. your probably thinking of 2004/2005 DNF which was the inbetween of the old "2001" story/levels and the story/levels that we got in the final game. iirc at this stage the game was pretty much fully "playable" from start to finish but the levels were only really polished from the start to the stratosphere chapter

I paid $10 for it from a clearance bin and played it before any modern YouTuber did anything with it, and I hated it so much. It was so much worse than I expected and the impressions I got from word of mouth, I was expecting a 4 out of 10 game but it just couldn't muster even that much.
It's like a bizarro understanding of what made Duke Nukem 3D so good, there's recognizable little bits and pieces of it in there but as a whole it's just executed very badly, and bears unpleasant hallmarks of a lot of the most generic of first person shooters of the time (yet mostly done worse than the popular ones of the time).

I hated Randy Pitchford before YouTubers made it cool to do so.

Strafe a lot, moving forward/backwards while strafing is significantly faster and get a feel for the lock on aim and you'll wipe them out before they touch you.

It's basically Tomb Raider Duke Edition, but I would argue that the level design is better than Tomb Raider, for the most part.

Take 2 Interactive gave Gearbox a budget to piece the game together, which Gearbox then mostly funneled into Borderlands instead.
