Seeing all this talk about Mario Kart lately, I still find myself going back to 64.
The controls, tracks and music are perfect in my opinion and while it lacks single player content I still find fun to do all the cups or beat my own track records in Time Trials.
You didn't really beat Mario Kart 64 until you beat the Mario, Luigi and Peach ghosts on the tima trial
>>11797304 (OP)MK64 is fun! I prefer DD when it comes to racing with friends, but 64 has undeniably the best battles in the series
>>11797387I wish the other tracks also had staff ghosts
>>11797304 (OP)I think its still my favorite of the series. Its an enhancement to the original, I love the pre-rendered graphics and some of the atmospheric levels like Toad's Turnpike. I also miss the original kart designs from the first three games, are they still even usable in any games beyond Super Circuit? The later games are fine and more wacky, but I kinda think they go a little too abstract in a way. I think there is still a niche for something that is designed to a whimsical, but not too crazy go-kart simulator.
Mario Kart 64 honestly just makes me laugh and roll my eyes really hard. I guess it's sorta fun in a "it's so bad it's funny" type of way, but I can't truly picture myself even ironically enjoying it for long durations. No. The gameplay is utterly pathetic. The rubber banding is legendary. The only thing that I genuinely like about the game is that it's interesting Mario aesthetics in 3D, and that's pretty cool (although, of course, it's nothing compared to the masterpiece of Super Mario 64). Really, I would just recommend Diddy Kong Racing, because that game is Mario Kart 64, but actually good. And not even "just good", it's genuinely amazing.
>>11797619agreed, i have never once understood the hype of 64, it actually might be the worst entry in the whole series
>>11797567Sonic R barely passes as a real game
>>11797619>>11797625If you didn't dunk on your faggot friends by playing Bowser on Blockfort and ramming into them to make them lose balloons, then you will never understand the true MK64 experience.
>>11797562yeah, the og kart design has come back as the pipe frame in a few games.
I always pick Wario and don't give a fuck
>>11797619>I would just recommend Diddy Kong Racingah, the no friend choice.
SP is superior in DKR, sure, but there has never been a better MP racer than MK64.
>>11797625That's super circuit, or non-/vr/ MK7.
It's funny that in 64 they realized immediately that blue shells in single player would be really fucking annoying in their debut game and disabled them for cpu racers (or made them exceedingly rare) accordingly, but then they made the cpus spam the little shits in every subsequent game
>>11797884At least in double dash cpu can only access them in 150 or mirrored, seems like it was a difficulty choice
>>11797304 (OP)Mogged in every conceivable way by Diddy Kong racing
>>11797489To be fair, these 3 circuits are the only ones that are (mostly) realistic gokart circuits and not fantasy setting/design with wild hazards and what not, they are the best for pure racing and utilizing the mini turbo to the max
>>11797304 (OP)You can play stuff like OverKart 64 or Amped Up if you want more content and even improved gameplay.
