Wart was using it for monsters, but when Mario or one of the other three got into his throne room their superior non-dreamstuff psyche took precedence and made it produce what they wanted most at the moment: something that could beat Wart.

The people in the dream world were using it to make good dreams or something like that, Wart stole it to make monsters/nightmares. Why it's making vegetables when you face him is unclear but I assume it's because either your character did it or the machine was reacting to them wanting to beat Wart.

I like the idea of there being other villains in the world of Mario that he occasionally finds and stops. I don't mind them looking similar to Bowser, being some oversized animal that also happens to breathe fire/lightning or spit bubbles or something at you. K. That might not have been easy to do back in the NES days when half the villains were basically Bowser clones anyway. They all seemed to be some big animal. Most dressed up like a king with a robe and crown. Making some new large animal guy final boss in the next Mario game might be copying some other company character somewhere and making legal problems.
