Playing this for the first time and it's a long hard march when you have a "balanced" team (fighter, monk, white mage, black mage for me) but it feels rewarding to explore the map and manage your resources. You get by the skin of your teeth in the dungeons too.

And the dungeons have so much treasure you have to decide whether it’s worth risking a detour or keep searching for the boss.

I'm definitely enjoying it, there's a bit more thought to the random battles than I expected so you're not just pressing "attack" forever.

The dungeons too feel like you can only go so far before you have to retreat, resupply and heal fully, because one bad battle can spell disaster. For contrast I'm playing SD Gundam Gaiden: Knight Gundam Monogatari (a DQ3 clone) in tandem, and it's a game I've played before, but it's a very forgiving and faster-paced experience (levelling up in KGM heals you completely, so the action moves quite quickly).

There's a reason it's in parenthesis.

nice these guys get it! there’s a ton of risk reward just from saving spells and seeing how deep you can explore. even just limping back out of dungeons after a boss fight is super fun. even the teleport only escapes you a single level up and you still have to run to town. good times.

FF1 is one of the most perfectly balanced JRPG I've played. IMO it's probably one of the reasons why it did so well, on top of pushing the enveloppe and bringing the genre forwards while most others were just doing straight copy-paste of DQ (but worse).
