decided to play Madden '99 on the N64 and go with an exhibition match between the Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs.
at some point, Eugene Robinson (Falcons' free safety) grabbed a fumble by Tony Gonzalez (Chiefs' TE)
and i see a photo of Eugene Robinson in a Green Bay Packers uniform even though he's on the Atlanta Falcons roster.

It's very common for franchise sports games to display players' photos in last year's uniform. At one point Madden just had all players dress in a generic uniform but I don't know if they still do that.

I think the NFL has everyone do that in general now, then they photoshop the correct uniform on them.

Explain me the point of sports games. Not trying to start shit either, I just don't get them. It was always a fucking nightmare as a kid visiting my cousin since that's all he ever played on his Sega.

why 99 specifically?

why play any game? don't look at the license, look at the gameplay. Sports games are effectively a type of RTS. I think a lot of gamers get caught up in the Jocks v Nerds culture war and immediately dismiss out of hand sports games because "sports are for jocks and jocks are my mortal enemy". You don't have to know the teams or the players to understand what's happening, you learn based on how they perform in-game like in any other game. teams are factions, players are units. You're playing C&C or StarCraft, just with a stick&ball rather than guns and spells.

I think (>>11798842) nailed it, but just to add a few things... sports video games have been a thing from the get go, since Tennis For Two and Pong, other types of games being turned into video games is also common, look at RPGs, board games and card games in general, and they're often beloved. Of course, it's not as fantasy like as other video games, so what's the point? If playing the real sport is possible, why not do that? Well, it's not always viable to set up a match with friends, people are busy with other things and getting everyone together won't always work, also there is a fantasy element if you like the sport, taking your team to a title you might never see them win for real, becoming a professional player though you didn't make it in real life.

I'd give them a shot, anon! I think you could find some enjoyment.

Madden typically comes out in the middle of August before final roster cuts are made and the teams are based by a projected 53 man roster on whose on the team at the start of training camp in July
Default starting lineups, because trades and injuries rarely match up to the real life rosters before the day one patch.
