Besides Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Breath of Fire, what are some classic JRPGs I should play? Specifically like, the ones that embody the classic stereotype, yknow; fantasy medieval setting, block pushing puzzles, etc.
(Do the Golden Sun games fall under that description, actually?)

Closest I've ever gotten to a classic JRPG series like that is Mother, which is instead playing on subverting that trope rather than actually embodying it..

>fantasy medieval setting
Final Fantasy has had sci-fi shit in it ever since the first game and since you've also named Mother I'm gonna go ahead and say that you should play Phantasy Star 1. It also has first-person dungeons like Wizardry but still if you want a classic JRPG, it's as classic as it gets, really

Lunar series. You can either go with the Sega CD versions or PSX version. They both have their pros and cons so you can go with either.

It's not my favorite FF but FF9 is the embodiment of what classic J-RPG are

I recommend the switch Sega Ages version or the PS2 remake

I only mentioned Mother to raise how it doesn't count despite being the closest I've personally played lol, but you're entirely right that I should get to Phantasy Star eventually nevertheless.

Chrono Trigger and Knights of Xentar

Neither of them is stereotypical but that's what makes them good

Sure, but I'm specifically trying to look for games that embody that classic style because I don't actually know of many at all that get praised.

Even 90s RPGs already seem like they're trying to subvert those classic tropes, or evolve away from them, which makes it weird to me when I don't actually KNOW of many games that embody the tropes that they're subverting.

>subvert
>Mother 1
You're thinking of Earthbound.
The only subversive thing M1 did was the urban fantasy schtick instead of the medieval fantasy direction most jrpgs had.

I'd say Mother 1 is pretty wild on how it isn't divided by overworld map and sub-maps for towns (like most RPGs) and instead goes for an actual gigantic map you can explore every inch of

Its too bad theres nothing to find when you explore the whole map, that game has miles of empty space.

Ff and lufia are the only ones worth playing and lufia only lufia 2

Breath of fire is trash
Lunar is trash
All sega rpgs are trash including star phantasy 4
Bahamut lagoon and all those square wannabe rpgs are fucking trash
It's literally all trash I've tried em all trying to recreate the ff magic. Literally lufia 2 is the only decent one and that's for more gameplay than story

Btw all squaresoft rpgs are good and don't apply to my criticism up to ff9 arguably ff10. Even ff9 is mid to me though

>all games are bad except the ones that impacted into my retarded brain completely by chance
An excellent review, presented without the slightest sense of introspection.

There are a lot of them but the likes of which you won't see mentionned in those threads because they're either super niche or really subpar. For instance on Famicom you have Deep Dungeon 3 and 4, which embody the medieval fantasy tropes really well but are super niche, or Chaos World, Silva Saga or Double Moon Densetsu which are your average early FF/DQ copies.

Those are just a few examples, basically yes there are a lot that use the classic tropes, most of them don't get talked as much because at this point they only catter to the most hardcore fanbases so you won't see them mentionned in a recommendation thread for someone just getting started. Pic related, another average game

With that said most JRPGs don't really have puzzles of any kind (block pushing or not) in their dungeons, but Shining the Holy Ark does and they were pretty fun.

Huh, really? Geez well, where did that stereotype even come from then?

It's more of a Zelda action-adventure thing than an RPG thing, at best RPGs usually have things like turnpikes (in first person dungeon crawlers), dark areas that need to be lit, teleporters, or anti-magic zones

If you can hang with the goofy look to the 3D battles I'd recommend the first Wild Arms. Even with its Old West veneer it's surprisingly traditional fantasy fare. 2 and 3 are also good but a lot less fantasy-like.
If you do intend to try WA1, be aware a very important and lengthy cutscene can only be found by idling long enough on the title screen.

This game is so good. One of the few actually "hidden" gems (but maybe not if you're japanese)

Can you get a more stable or even higher framerate when emulating Virtual Hydlide? I played the first Hydlide and it's a cute game for how early it is. Super Hydlide meanwhile is fantastic, I adored it.

I don't think so
