The Jap view of Sega is that the Mega Drive failed while the Saturn succeeded.

The Western view of Sega was that the Saturn failed while the Mega Drive succeeded.

I guess in the end it all comes down to the games.

Yeah but that surprisingly didn't bother the Japanese much.

In Japan the Megadrive was almost entirely a first party console. Even more so than the N64 or any other Nintendo console. Whereas in the rest of the world the Megadrive/Genesis had great third party support.

Pic related, out of the 100 best sellers on Megadrive in Japan, about 70% were Sega published

The Mega Drive in Japan suffered from a lackluster launch lineup, it damaged it's reputation in the long run even if the games got better. The PC Engine got better results at that time and the Famicom still was strong.

The Mega Drive also had constrained availability. Nintendo strong armed small retailers into not stocking the console so only major retailers would carry it. They couldn't do the same to NEC because they were an even bigger corporation than Nintendo.

It took a few years for the MD to get going. Once they had Sonic it started to progress better.

it progressed because sega dropped the price and started bundling the megadrive with sonic, columns etc. and later, much like nintendo, decided to count pack-in titles as "sales" of games. if sega didn't bundle the megadrive with sonic it probably wouldn't have sold more than 1 million copies or so instead of the 4.5 million or whatever.

the Genesis launched as a TGX16 competitor in Japan, the SNES didn't go on sale until nearly two years later. the Genesis so thoroughly demolished the TGX that NEC effectively abandoned it after 1990.
