Why did they do it? Why did they resign to churning out low effort mahjong instead of embracing their innovative (Crazy Climber) and shmup routes? It clearly wasn't a profit motive, because within about a decade of going full slop, they went out of business.

After 1989, their arcade side was all strip mahjong (to the point where their last titles have video integration necessitating them to sign deals with JAV companies). Japanese regulations eventually pushed these out of public arcades, which destroyed what their last thing they excelled at.
