Street Fighter 2 has a gimmick, it's called multiplayer fighting in a genre that traditionally did not have that. Also cool gimmicks like projectile attacks, and dizzies, and three round systems. Lane system is definitely a gimmick. Being on a different lane is basically an universal stance where you don't have much options. Stances are usually considered gimmicky but at least they add some distinction to characters. The idea of universal stances are stupid.
If they wanted an evasion move they could just make it like in KoF.

It also doesn't make sense from the game world perspective. If I just moved to the side, why does my move list become limited? Why can't I just gradually walk towards the background and away like in belt-scrolling games? Savage Reign has a better implementation of lanes where they are represented as platforms which you can use to attack your opponent from above.
