How can a game this commercially successful, as well as easily accessable and simple to play, filter so many people?

They're talking about the map that you have to go up then back down to reach a teleporter, the one where no one does it the way Valve intended and they simply crouch-jump onto a flying manta ray and ride it over.

Nothing wrong with that map. Fight some vorts on ground level, do some spelunking, find an elevator, fight some controllers in the air, do a few simple jumps, ride a manta ray, done. Fair and simple.

I don't think that the first Half-Life has really any weak parts at all. Xen is good, the platforming is fine.
Guys like Casali, Johnson and Guthrie are master level designers.

usually when people bitch about interloper, they're talking specifically about the factory.

I agree. Xen is way overhated.

Nah, tons of people hate the first part where you have to ride a manta ray. It's a pretty good level when you know what to do, but I will admit the game is needlessly opaque here. They could have made the cavern opening a bit more obvious. Even Dario Casali got stuck here during his anniversary playthrough.
