Famicom FFs have better graphics when it comes backgrounds (overworld, dungeons, towns, etc) but Famicom DQs have better enemy art by a long shot (though FF's aren't bad either in this department). DQ enemies are dripping with soul and just leap off the screen, they really feel alive, whereas in FF you know you're just looking at (good looking) pixel art.

early DQ definitely clears FF and 3-5 is clearly the peak of DQ being an innovative and groundbreaking series when FF was still just alright. problem is after that FF enters its peak from 6-10 right when DQ starts becoming stale and rehash/nostalgia bait over and over again, and the FF peak is definitely greater than the dq peak overall (6-10 is probably the greatest streak of any game series unless you disqualify mario 2 or zelda 2). of course after X FF becomes iredeemable slop shit and DQ at least remained true to its foundations so it gets the edge again. really pretty balanced overall

yeah this is really where the toriyama art shines. even dq 1 has awesome looking enemy sprites to this day. the non battle stuff I find really bland, dq V especially looks really outdated but I know it was an early snes title. until you get to dqIII snes/dq VI which are some of the best looking (and sounding) 16 bit games ever made. then you have VII which is probably one of the worst looking jrpgs on the system, then VIII on ps2 is one of the best looking games, really just all over the place in presentation.
