What an unfortunate timing.
>sandwiched between VF2/VF3 and Tekken 3
>western release cancelled because Saturn was already dead over here
>took another 6 months to make the ps1 port which looked cool but the gameplay was outdated at that point
Could it have been saved?

They should've skipped the Saturn version altogether and do a PS1 port but earlier, because PS1 was easier to develop for. Like late 1996 or very early 1997. That way they would've competed against Tekken 2 which was already old and Soul Edge which didn't sell well.

I honestly think Fighting Vipers looks better with real gouraud shading and light sourcing.

DOA is too creepy to a lot of people. Even me as a giant coomer I can't appreciate. Because it's a video game that gives you a boner but it's not easy enough or hot enough that you can play with your hand. So like what am I supposed to do. Meanwhile the prudes don't like it either cause they're prudes. Who is left liking DOA? I honestly don't know. Who plays DOA? Girls I guess. Cool girls. They don't get boners and they can self-insert as cool characters

All the 2d fighters are pretty distinct due to being able to do more, then with 3d you have
>VF, rhythm based hand to hand "realistic" fighting
>Tekken, the same but more casual friendly and a bit more flashy with specials but not full on projectiles etc
So what the hell separates FoA besides coomer tits? I never played one game in it

>Tekken, the same
They are not even similar. VF is a rock paper scissors game where each move can be beat with another move. Tekken is basically Mortal Kombat in 3D - bait the opponents whiff, catch him into your launch move then juggle combo his ass. EWGF is a glorified Scorpion spear.

Euroanon here. PS1 DoA was played almost as much as Tekken 3 in my friends group. We thought it was a cool looking fighting game with sick reversals. It also was advertized a lot in magazines. I didn't know it sold very little until many years later. Back in 1998 it looked like a major release.

Forgot to add, the magazine adverts had Bayman and Zack renders and I thought Bayman was the main character.

how wasn't it saved, it came out on PS1 and like a year into the Saturn's life you were seeing import games at EB and everyone knew a GameShark could be used as an import key.

DoA is more like Virtua Fighter. There are three types of moves, strikes, throws and holds. Strikes beat throws, throws beat holds, holds beat strikes. And in typical 3D fightan fashion there are a million moves for every character.

Or to give an example, if you press the button to do a strike and at the same time your opponent goes for a throw, your attack is guaranteed to hit, you're immune to throws while it's happening. But if your opponent does a hold, you'll get flipped on your ass. And if you tried to do a throw and your opponent tried to do a hold, you're guaranteed to grab him.

It would be simple, if not for the fact that, like all fighting games, moves are too fast to really react to unless they're projectiles or whatever. So you just have to guess, and you'll often guess wrong until you sufficiently hone your sixth sense through thousands of matches.

Apparently DOA3's PAL version has severe issues when being played on the Xbox 360. Is this still true or was it all fixed?

>Saturn was already dead over here
They should have used the japanese saturn game boxes and games. Western saturn had ugly boxes and barely any games. The only games for saturn I could remember here were Panzer Dragoon and Clockwork Knight.
